This 300-denier oxford polyester safety wear has been lined with polyurethane (PU) to provide water-resistance. The manufacturer was unable to provide further information on the waterproof rating of his product. All seams have been taped and heat-sealed. The inner part of the coat has been entirely lined with a comfortable mesh fabric. The sleeves, however, are lined with a thin layer of polyester.

It is recommended for any worker surrounded by motorized vehicles: school crossing guards, drivers, transport workers, etc.

Reflective stripes and visibility:
This water-resistant coat has been provided with silver retroreflective stripes, each one measuring 50 mm (2 in.) in width. This raincoat has two stripes at the waist, back X-shaped stripes, and two stripes around each arm.

Fluorescent yellow (or that safety greenish yellow) is quite visible during daylight and in poor natural light conditions, e.g. at dawn or dusk. In most cases, this yellow ensures a high contrast with most backgrounds. Since bright yellow is lighter than orange, it can be perceived more easily at night, yet reflective stripes will always be best in the dark.

Silver retroreflective stripes are the most visible there is in poor lighting conditions, be it natural or artificial, since they reflect the light toward the light source (flashlight, automotive headlamp, etc.). Therefore, they offer greater protection at dawn, dusk, and night. Reflective bands won’t, however, increase visibility during daylight.

Design:
This polyester coat offers some resistance to abrasion. The wide style of this coat allows one to easily wear warm clothes underneath while still allowing a good airflow. It features two small vents which are flap-protected. Each sleeve is equipped with a fit Spandex™ and polyester cuff to prevent rain to enter through wrist openings. They are also equipped with hook and loop fasteners on the wrist to ensure a fit adjustment. The hood may be adjusted with a stretchable cord. It may be removed and snapped on again as needed.

This raincoat closes at the front with a double slider plastic zipper which is protected by a hook and loop sealed flap. This rainwear also features two big flap-protected pockets, a press stud sealed see-through pocket to hold ID cards, and a hidden pocket that closes with a zipper. All seams have been taped and heat-sealed. This coat is not flame-resistant.

This PU lined oxford polyester raincoat is said to be manufactured with a 300-deniers yarn; in layman’s terms, it is a medium-weight coat which is lightweight enough to offer comfort but is heavyweight enough to offer an effective protection. By definition, 300 deniers refer to the weight in grams of 9,000 m of the yarn used to make this coat, that is, 300 deniers equal 300 g. The manufacturer is unable to provide the polyurethane liner’s thickness.

Regarding the oxford term, it refers to the type of woven fabric. The oxford cloth is widely used in the industry, namely to manufacture dress shirts, coats, bags, etc. The oxford weaving consists in interlacing a warp thread (horizontal line) and a weft thread (vertical line) to create the oxford’s infamous basket weave structure.

Water-resistance:
Polyurethane-lined waterproof safety wear is usually worn by workers who may be exposed to remote risks of chemical splashes. PU is lightweight and porous; it’s thus ideal to manufacture light and breathable workwear. The manufacturer is unable to provide information on this raincoat resistance to hydrostatic pressure. Upon examination and comparison to similar products, we assume that this coat can withhold a hydrostatic pressure of about 5,000 mm, i.e. it can withstand the pressure of a 5 m water column. A waterproof rating is granted when a material has been tested under the pressure of a cylinder filled with water, in this case, 5 m high of water. This height defines the limit at which the material stops being resistant and water starts passing through. PU is lightweight and porous; it’s thus ideal to manufacture light and breathable workwear. Yet, during heavy rains and windstorms, PU tends to get waterlogged and lose all its water-resistant property. Once overloaded, polyurethane lets water leach into the raincoat under any pressure, e.g. by leaning on something or bending over.

Maintenance:
This raincoat should always be machine-washed in a delicate setting with cold or lukewarm water, and a gentle soap. Never use bleaching agents or fabric softeners on this coat. It should also be air-dried in a sheltered spot out of direct sunlight. Never tumble dry, iron or dry clean this raincoat.
