Pioneer® Product Code: V1190460

These fluorescent yellow flagman pants meet the new Transports Québec standard which came into effect in December 2014. It is also meets CSA Z96-15, Class 3 standard requirements if worn with matching high-visibility traffic control waterproof safety coat (see item VP18).

This 300-denier oxford polyester safety wear has been lined with polyurethane (PU) to provide water-resistance. The manufacturer grants this product a waterproof rating of 5,000 mm, i.e. it can withstand the pressure of a 5 m water column. A waterproof rating is granted when a material has been tested under the pressure of a cylinder filled with water, in this case, 5 m high of water. This height defines the limit at which the material stops being resistant and water starts passing through.

All seams have been taped and heat-sealed.

Reflective stripes and visibility:
These water-resistant pants have been provided with altering silver retroreflective stripes and fluorescent orange stripes. Each one of them has a width of 50 mm (2 in.). These pants have three horizontal stripes around the ankles.

Fluorescent yellow (or that safety greenish yellow) is quite visible during daylight and in poor natural light conditions, e.g. at dawn or dusk. In most cases, this yellow ensures a high contrast with most backgrounds. Since bright yellow is lighter than orange, it can be perceived more easily at night, yet reflective stripes will always be best in the dark.

Fluorescent orange is quite visible during daylight and in bright artificial lighting conditions. In most cases, it ensures a high contrast with most backgrounds. However, bright orange is less visible at night and in poor lighting conditions, be it natural or artificial, e.g. at dawn or dusk.

Silver retroreflective stripes are the most visible there is in poor lighting conditions, be it natural or artificial, since they reflect the light toward the light source (flashlight, automotive headlamp, etc.). Therefore, they offer greater protection at dawn, dusk, and night. Reflective bands won’t, however, increase visibility during daylight.

Design:
These pants feature belt loops for a personalized adjustment, and a press stud fly opening and closure on the waistband. They also feature boot access zippers with adjustable ankles which also maintain comfort during hot weather. These pants have also been equipped with two lateral pockets and four cargo pockets with flap closure. The pants are equipped with a fly opening at the front that closes with hook and loops.

These PU lined oxford polyester pants are said to be manufactured with a 300-deniers yarn; in layman’s terms, it is a medium-weight protective wear which is lightweight enough to offer comfort but is heavyweight enough to offer an effective protection. By definition, 300 deniers refer to the weight in grams of 9,000 m of the yarn used to make these pants, that is, 300 deniers equal 300 g. The manufacturer, Pioneer®, is unable to provide the polyurethane liner’s thickness.

Regarding the oxford term, it refers to the type of woven fabric. The oxford cloth is widely used in the industry, namely to manufacture dress shirts, coats, bags, etc. The oxford weaving consists in interlacing a warp thread (horizontal line) and a weft thread (vertical line) to create the oxford’s infamous basket weave structure.

Water-resistance:
Polyurethane-lined waterproof safety wear is usually worn by workers who may be exposed to remote risks of chemical splashes. PU is lightweight and porous; it’s thus ideal to manufacture light and breathable workwear. Yet, during heavy rains and windstorms, PU tends to get waterlogged and lose all its water-resistant property. Once overloaded, polyurethane lets water leach into the pants under any pressure, e.g. by leaning on something or bending over. Given the responsibilities flagmen take, breathable pants are a must.

Maintenance:
These pants should always be machine-washed in a delicate setting with cold or lukewarm water, and a gentle soap. Never use bleaching agents or fabric softeners on these pants. They should also be air-dried in a sheltered spot out of direct sunlight. Never tumble dry, iron or dry clean this raincoat.

Accessories:
You can obtain the flagging rain coats under product code VP18. Depending on the season, you can get the summer pants (VV19) or the winter pants (VV56P). You may also need other complementary items such as the flag (EFLA17), the stick (EFLAB) or the safety helmet (TA14LRHV).
