The 3M 787C 60+ grit fiber disc is a high-performance abrasive engineered specifically for aggressive grinding on stainless steel and high-nickel alloys. Its precision-shaped ceramic grain delivers fast, efficient cutting while generating less heat than conventional abrasives, reducing the risk of heat tinting and metallurgical damage to machined workpieces. The rigid fiber construction maintains dimensional stability under heavy grinding pressure.
The 60+ grit represents the most aggressive cutting level in the 787C series, ideal for heavy metal removal, weld dressing and rough grinding on high-performance steel. This disc is designed for use with 5-inch (127 mm) rigid backing pads on right angle grinders with a 7/8-inch (22.225 mm) center hole. Maximum operating speed: 12,000 rpm.
3M's precision-shaped ceramic grain technology ensures continuous self-sharpening during use, maintaining a sharp cutting action throughout the disc's entire life. Unlike conventional abrasive grains that dull quickly, the ceramic grain fractures in a controlled manner to always present fresh cutting edges. The result is superior productivity and reduced abrasive costs over the full production cycle.

The SAB89637 disc is sold by the case (smallest purchase unit = bag, grouped into a case). Available on special order from Sylprotec. Suitable for professional manufacturing environments requiring controlled finish quality on premium ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
In metal fabrication shops, the 60+ grit quickly removes excess metal, cutting burrs and surface irregularities from machined parts. The precise geometry of the ceramic grain ensures repeatable cuts from one disc to the next : essential in serial production environments where finish consistency is a quality criterion.
Stainless steel boilers, tanks and pressure vessels require a high-performance abrasive that works on stainless without cross-contamination risk from ferrous residues. The 787C 60+ is ideal for joint chamfering before welding, weld bead dressing and surface preparation for quality inspection. Its low heat generation protects the metallurgical integrity of austenitic stainless steel.
After each welding pass, the 787C 60+ disc removes heat tint (weld discoloration), spatter and surface imperfections on stainless steel. Its direct cutting action reduces the number of passes needed to achieve a satisfactory finish, speeding up the production cycle in TIG and MIG welding on stainless.
High-nickel alloys (Inconel, Hastelloy, Waspaloy) are far more abrasion-resistant than ordinary steel. The precision-shaped ceramic grain in the 787C 60+ maintains aggressive cutting on these demanding materials where conventional abrasives quickly lose effectiveness. It is a preferred choice in aerospace maintenance and repair shops.
The 60+ grit provides the most aggressive cut in the 787C series: maximum material removal, rapid rough grinding, ideal for heavy welds and very irregular surfaces. The 80+ grit (SAB89646) offers an excellent balance between cutting speed and finish quality, recommended for most standard operations on stainless steel. The 120+ grit (SAB89655) is reserved for fine intermediate finishing before polishing or precision coating. Guideline: start with 60+ grit if the surface is rough, then progress to 80+ or 120+ depending on the required finish level.
The SAB89637 disc is compatible with all standard angle grinders equipped with a 5-inch (127 mm) rigid backing pad and a maximum speed of 12,000 rpm. A rigid backing pad sized for the disc diameter is mandatory : the disc must never be used without a rigid backing pad. Verify that the grinder's maximum speed does not exceed 12,000 rpm. Variable-speed grinders must be set accordingly before use.
3M's precision-shaped ceramic grain generally offers a significantly longer service life than conventional aluminum oxide or zirconia alumina abrasives on stainless steel and nickel alloys. The continuous self-sharpening action of the grain maintains cutting aggressiveness longer, reducing replacement frequency. On hard metals, service life can be 2 to 3 times longer than a conventional disc of the same diameter, depending on operating conditions, applied pressure and the material being worked.
Grinding metal generates sparks, metallic dust and high noise levels.
