The OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Association), established by the US Congress in 1970, is the government agency in charge of the enforcement of health and work safety regulations in the United States. Even though here in Canada, we already have a governmental body taking care of all OHS issues, yet sometimes companies and employers prefer to use OSHA standards which are also in use in Canada. Similar to the CSA, the OSHA has rules when it comes to communicating regulations. Smoking was banned in the United States by the federal “Ban on Smoking in Federal Buildings Act” of 1993 which covers many workplaces, but not all. The OSHA has played a consistently large role in the smoking cessation program against the tobacco lobby. In Canada, it is in the hands of provincial governments to ban smoking in public spaces; between 2003 and 2009, all 10 provinces and 3 territories of Canada have adopted laws banning smoking in public spaces. These laws may not cover your workplace; if that is the case, the employer is entitled to enforce a non-smoking rule on the premises, be it for ideological or safety reasons. If such a rule is established, a sign must be displayed. Although not mandatory, displaying safety signs is quite recommended to indicate any regulation since it ultimately allows to avoid many woes and sorrows.
