The OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Association), established by the US Congress in 1970, is the government agency in charge of the enforcement of health and work safety regulations in the United States. Even though here in Canada, we already have a governmental body taking care of all OHS issues, yet sometimes companies and employers prefer to use OSHA standards which are also in use in Canada. Similar to the CSA, the OSHA also has a policy regarding general physical hazards: OSHA 1910.144. According to this standard, and all those under the subpart J, all employers are required to report any potential or confirmed danger to their employees. In this particular case, let’s say an employee is tasked with sweeping stairs, for example, the employer might want to make sure all employees working under the stairs are taken under consideration and safe from getting a dust cloud on their heads.
