This industrial high-density polyethylene (HDPE) open-head barrel, manufactured by Greif, is designed for the safe collection, storage and shipment of hazardous waste, contaminated absorbents, solid or paste chemicals and granular materials. Its open-head design with removable lid and integrated closing ring makes it a versatile, stackable and leakproof container, suitable for indoor use or outdoor storage. Greif is one of the world's largest industrial container manufacturers, and this barrel is produced in the United States to the most rigorous quality standards in the industry.
Made from HDPE, this barrel offers excellent resistance to dilute acids, bases, salts and many solvents. The material is UV-resistant and impact-resistant, making it a reliable choice for outdoor sites, loading docks and warehouses. Lighter than a steel barrel, it is easier to handle and can be cleaned and reused according to your hazardous waste management program requirements.
This barrel is Transport Canada approved and bears the official UN marking molded directly into the plastic. The rating 1H2/Y/S means: drum (1) in plastic (H) with open head (2), approved for packing groups II and III (Y), for solids or inner packagings containing liquids (S). Not for use with bulk liquids.. The number that follows (65, 150 or 250) indicates the maximum gross weight in kg by size. Available in three sizes with their full rating:
Typical applications: collection and transport of hazardous waste (lab packs), storage of dry and granular products, shipping of contaminated absorbents or used PPE, decontamination and disaster recovery, storage of chemicals in inner packagings. Industries served: chemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, environmental and hazardous materials management.
No. The S rating in the UN designation 1H2/Y.../S indicates that this barrel is approved only for solids or inner packagings containing liquids, for example, sealed cans or bottles placed inside the barrel (lab pack). It must not be used to transport liquids poured directly into the barrel. For bulk liquid transport, a container with an L (liquid) rating is required.
This barrel is approved for packing groups II (medium danger) and III (minor danger) : it is not suitable for packing group I (great danger). It can contain hazardous solids (dusts, granules, contaminated absorbents) or inner packagings containing class 3, 6, 8 or 9 liquids, subject to applicable TDG rules. Always consult your TDG advisor to validate compliance for your specific shipment.
After each use, visually inspect the barrel for cracks, deformations or damage to the closing ring. Clean with warm water and a neutral detergent compatible with the residues present. Do not use aggressive solvents that could weaken the HDPE. A barrel that is damaged, deformed or whose lid no longer closes hermetically must be removed from service. Replacement frequency depends on use, chemical exposure and the regulatory requirements of your TDG program.
