The 3M FT-11 Sweet Sensitivity Test Solution (saccharin-based) is used as the first step of the qualitative respirator fit testing protocol with the FT-10 apparatus. Before proceeding with the actual fit test, it is essential to verify that the participant can detect the sweet taste of the saccharin solution. This sensitivity step determines the minimum concentration of solution that the participant can perceive, ensuring that the FT-12 fit test solution will be administered at a sufficient concentration to detect a leak. The 55 mL bottle allows multiple test sessions to be performed. Compliant with the requirements of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 and CSA Z94.4 protocols.
3M Manufacturer Code: 7000029587, model: FT-11
The FT-11 solution is sold in a box of 6 units of 55 mL each. It is used exclusively with the FT-10 Qualitative Fit Test Apparatus (sweet system). The saccharin solution is considered non-toxic at the concentrations used during fit testing, but should be handled with appropriate personal protective equipment. Each bottle is designed to be used with the FT-13 nebulizer to spray the solution inside the FT-14 test hood. The solution is packaged in individual units to facilitate inventory management and prevent cross-contamination.
Store the FT-11 solution at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Check the expiry date before use. Do not mix with the FT-12 fit test solution or with the bitter FT-31 or FT-32 solutions. Use a dedicated nebulizer for the sensitivity solution, separate from the nebulizer used for the fit test solution. In case of contact with skin or eyes, rinse thoroughly with water.
The FT-11 is a sensitivity solution: it is used to determine whether the participant can detect the sweet taste of saccharin before beginning the fit test. The FT-12 is the actual fit test solution, administered at a higher concentration while the participant performs movement exercises to evaluate the seal of their respirator. These two solutions work together in the FT-10 qualitative fit testing protocol (sweet system). The FT-11 is used first, the FT-12 second. Both are sold separately in boxes of 6 units.
Both solutions (FT-11 sweet and FT-31 bitter) serve the same role: testing the participant's sensitivity before the main fit test. The key difference is that the FT-11 is saccharin-based (sweet taste) and is used with the FT-10 apparatus, while the FT-31 is Bitrex-based (bitter taste) and is used with the FT-30 apparatus. Both test types are recognized by the OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 and CSA Z94.4 protocols. Some participants may be more or less sensitive to one taste or the other, which may influence the choice of test system used by the occupational health manager.
The number of tests achievable with a box of 6 FT-11 bottles depends on the sensitivity of each participant. The sensitivity solution is administered at increasing concentrations until the participant perceives the taste. In general, a 55 mL bottle allows several test sessions to be performed. For large-scale or regular fit testing programs (annual renewals), it is recommended to maintain an adequate stock of FT-11 and FT-12 solutions to avoid interrupting the program. The expiry date indicated on each bottle must be respected to ensure test reliability.
To perform fit tests under the best conditions, protect the technician with ambidextrous powder-free nitrile 3.8 mil gloves (GL7005), Privo safety glasses with amber lenses (YA12263), EARSOFT corded disposable earplugs (OA1252C), a PVC-coated nylon bib apron (VT1285), and Keep Kleen 8 mil nitrile gloves (GL7008).
