3M FT-12 Sweet Fit Test Solution, Box of 6 Units

The 3M FT-12 Sweet Fit Test Solution (saccharin-based) is used during the second step of the qualitative respirator fit testing protocol with the FT-10 apparatus. After confirming that the participant can detect the sweet taste with the FT-11 sensitivity solution, the FT-12 fit test solution is administered at a concentration tailored to the participant's sensitivity while they perform a series of standardized exercises. If the participant perceives the sweet taste through their respirator during these exercises, it indicates a leak and insufficient fit. The FT-12 solution thus validates or invalidates the respirator seal in accordance with the OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 and CSA Z94.4 protocols.

3M Manufacturer Code: 7100335089, model: FT-12

The FT-12 solution is sold in a box of 6 units of 55 mL each. It is used exclusively with the FT-10 Qualitative Fit Test Apparatus (sweet saccharin-based system).

It is compatible with particulate respirators and gas/vapor respirators equipped with a particulate prefilter. The FT-12 solution is administered using the FT-13 nebulizer inside the FT-14 test hood. It must not be mixed with the FT-11 sensitivity solution or the bitter FT-31 or FT-32 solutions, and must be applied with a separate nebulizer from the one used for the sensitivity solution.

Store the FT-12 solution at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and excessive heat sources. Check the expiry date before each use. Use only with the FT-13 nebulizer dedicated to the fit test solution. Do not transfer to another container. In case of eye or skin contact, rinse thoroughly with running water. Dispose of empty or expired bottles in accordance with local waste disposal regulations.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

In what order should the FT-11 and FT-12 solutions be used?

The FT-11 solution is always used first. It tests the participant's sensitivity: increasing concentrations of saccharin solution are sprayed until the participant detects the sweet taste. Once sensitivity is confirmed, the FT-12 solution is used for the actual fit test. The FT-12 is administered at a concentration based on the participant's sensitivity determined in the previous step. The participant then performs several exercises (speaking, moving the head, bending, normal and deep breathing) while the solution is nebulized. If the taste is perceived, the respirator fails the test at that configuration.

Is the FT-12 sweet solution equivalent to the FT-32 bitter solution?

The FT-12 sweet and FT-32 bitter solutions both serve the same role as the actual fit test agent, but use different agents. The FT-12 is saccharin-based (sweet taste) and works with the FT-10 apparatus, while the FT-32 is Bitrex-based (bitter taste) and works with the FT-30 apparatus. Both protocols are recognized by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 and CSA Z94.4. The choice between the two depends on the test system available and, sometimes, the participant's sensitivity to one or the other agent. Both solutions require their respective sensitivity solution (FT-11 or FT-31).

Can the FT-12 solution be used with the FT-30 bitter apparatus?

No. The FT-12 sweet solution is specifically designed for use with the FT-10 sweet apparatus. It must not be used with the FT-30 bitter apparatus. The two systems (FT-10/FT-11/FT-12 and FT-30/FT-31/FT-32) are distinct and are not interchangeable. Mixing solutions or using them with the wrong apparatus could compromise the validity of results and contravene OSHA and CSA protocols. If you need to perform fit tests with bitter solutions, use the FT-30 kit with the corresponding FT-31 and FT-32 solutions.
