The Act Respecting Occupational Health and Safety, more specifically section 51, requires that any employer takes the necessary measures to protect the health and ensure the safety and physical well-being of his worker. Although not mandatory, displaying safety signs is quite recommended to indicate the position of potential sources of danger. Signs that use the standardized symbols of CSAZ31-96 (R2006) are so well outlined and deliver so swiftly the message you wish to spread that whatever the prohibition, people will understand regardless of their language abilities. Wearing a compulsory seatbelt seems to have become part of our daily routine when driving a car. However, it is less so when driving a forklift, and yet the risks are just as present.

Signs based on the CSAZ31-96 (R2006) standard cover a wide range of circumstances due to their many pictograms, symbols, and captions that allow a plethora of combinations regardless of the areas of activity. Posters based on the CSAZ31-96 (R2006) symbols expressing a general message that states which service is available or regulation is in effect. The “Seat belts must be worn” sign displays a full black circle which indicates an obligation or a requirement.

Choosing a sign depends on several factors which have to be included in the equation: the ideal material for your workplace, the distance at which the sign will be seen which pins down the size of signs, the way the work environment is shaped which determines the format of signs -let’s say in a hallway, one usually finds an L-shaped sign, but in a wide room or at the junction of a T-shaped corridor, one finds a V-shaped sign since it allows a 180-degree perspective.

Plastic signs can either be displayed inside or outside. Please note that if your sign is exposed to UV light, colors will fade faster. UV-protecting lamination will slow down the process of fading but the colors will ultimately disappear. Aluminum signs suit a better purpose outside; of course, they can be displayed indoor, especially in an environment where an adverse impact is likely. Self-adhesive vinyl signs work just fine outside but are better fitted for indoor places.
