This safety helmet for construction workers features an injection molded fiberglass compound shell. Also known as a hard hat, this head protection gear is meet type 1 and class C in compliance with the CSA Z94.1-15 standard, which means it is legal to work with this piece of equipment in Canada since it offers a physical protection of the top of the head yet no electrical protection at all. This particular model of hard hat offers the advantage to be worn the regular way, that is, with the wave peek up front, but also in reverse donning. The latter mode allows one to see overhead if need be; it also allows one to wear a faceshield or a welding helmet by means of the Quick-Lok™ mounting blocks. The SuperEight™ suspension keeps the helmet in a comfortable position while dampening impacts. Its ratchet system allows a single-handed quick and easy adjustment. Roughneck™ hard hats also feature a foam sweat headband included on the suspension.

This safety gear also meets ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 type 1, class G requirements. Please note that a major difference sets apart the CSA and ANSI standards. According to the American standard, this hard hat qualifies as a class G meaning it offers an electrical protection from a 2,000 volts nominal current. According to the Canadian standard, this helmet is, however, a class C meaning it offers no electrical protection whatsoever.

Fibre-Metal® fiberglass compound shells are resistant to impacts, to cracks, and high temperatures up to 188 °C (370 °F). They are thus ideal for welders as well as workers in steel works, foundries, ironworks, boiler works, and chemical processing plants.

Materials:
The hard hat shell is made of an injection molded fiberglass compound, a material widely used industrially for its physical strength. If a hard hat must withstand contact with chemical products, it is recommended to perform a contact test with the specific chemicals involved, in order to ensure the materials of the hard hat will not be compromised. Fiberglass can withstand temperatures as high as 188 °C (370 °F).

The suspension (or headband or head helmet) is made of nylon, a strong a rigid polyamide quite resilient to mechanical forces. It also offers good resistance to fatigue strength, good gliding properties, and quite a resistance to wear and tear.

Certification:
This hard hat is certified type 1 which means it offers a protection from impacts occurring on the top of the head. It is also certified class C which means it offers no electrical protection since holes were pierced in the shell to make way for the Quick-Lok™ mounting blocks.

Class C Helmets:

Class C helmets offer no electrical protection whatsoever. If the shell happens to be pierced for either aeration purposes or to mount lamps on the hat, the shell will lose its natural dielectric properties. One may choose a class C helmet when working either in the mining industry or for roadworks.

Accessories:
Components such as faceshields and welding helmet can be added to the hard hat. Fibre-Metal® accessories equipped with Quick-Lok™ mounting cups are the only components compatible with Roughneck™ hard hats. Other models will most likely not be compatible since Fibre-Metal® helmets do not feature the standard slits on the sides. As for the earmuffs for protection against noise, only one model fits on this line of helmets: Quick-Slots™ (model 2029) earmuffs.

More choices are available when it comes to sweat headbands, suspensions, and cold weather protection liners.

Retro-reflective stripes are also available if a worker wishes to have some at the designated location of the lower part of the helmet; note, however, that the strips must be approved for this use by the manufacturer to be legal. One may choose to add decals or stickers, but they are not recommended since they prevent a good inspection of your PPEs.

Maintenance:
The CSA Z94.1-15 standard states that one shall inspect its hard hat and clean it daily. It is recommended to clean the shell and the suspension with lukewarm water and a mild soap such as dish soap.

Service Life:
According to the CSA, the hat as it is shall be inspected every day by the worker himself. He shall be looking for any traces of cracking, splitting or discolouration. This is why a helmet should never have stickers on it as it is too often. Basically, the color of the hat shall remain uniformly distributed. Note that any cleaning solution to aggressive when in contact with the helmet can and will damage it. One should never try to reuse a hard hat that withstood a solid impact. The manufacturer suggests that the shell has a service life of no more than 5 years.

The suspension should also be inspected and clean daily to remove sebum, hair, perspiration, etc. The manufacturer recommends the replacement of the suspension every year. To conclude, one should never use his helmet as a bucket or a bag to handle tools or just stuff around.
