The 3M FT-32 Fit Test Solution is a bitter aerosol agent used during qualitative respirator fit testing, in compliance with the requirements of Appendix A of OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.134. Each bottle contains 55 mL of concentrated solution, designed to be nebulized inside a test hood to determine the facial seal integrity of the respirator being tested.
3M Manufacturer Code: 7100350838, model: FT-32
The FT-32 solution is the bitter-flavored fit test agent (Bitrex) used in combination with the FT-31 sensitivity solution. The user must first demonstrate their ability to detect the bitter agent during the sensitivity test (FT-31), then undergo the actual fit test with the FT-32 solution while performing a standardized series of exercises with the respirator in place.
The box of 6 units simplifies supply management for health and safety professionals. This solution is used as a component of the qualitative fit testing program, particularly with the 3M FT-30 or FT-10 apparatus. It is available on request at Sylprotec.
Employers subject to OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134: U.S. regulations require an initial fit test for each worker who must wear a tight-fitting respirator, as well as an annual renewal fit test. The FT-32 solution directly meets this requirement by providing the recognized bitter qualitative fit test agent.
Respiratory protection programs compliant with CSA Z94.4: in Canada, CSA Z94.4 also mandates fit testing for tight-fitting facepiece respirators (half-masks and full-face respirators). The FT-32 solution is compatible with the bitter qualitative test protocol described in this standard.
Chemical, pharmaceutical, and food processing industries: workers exposed to chemical agents, organic dusts, or harmful vapors must wear approved respirators whose fit is verified periodically. The FT-32 solution enables HSE managers to conduct these checks on-site.
Healthcare facilities and public institutions: respiratory protection programs in hospital, laboratory, and public health emergency contexts include regular fit tests for N95 masks and filtering half-masks. The FT-32 integrates naturally into these protocols.
Construction, mining, and heavy industry: workers exposed to crystalline silica, refractory fibers, or suspended heavy metals must wear respirators with verified fit. The FT-32 solution facilitates compliance with HSE programs in these sectors.
The bitter qualitative fit test method is one of two OSHA-recognized methods (along with the saccharin sweet method). The FT-32 solution is formulated to produce a clear and reliable sensory response, enabling the detection of any significant facial leakage during testing. Its use follows a standardized protocol, ensuring reproducible results across different operators.
The FT-32 solution is part of 3M's complete qualitative fit testing toolkit. It is included in the FT-30 kit (complete test apparatus), but also available separately for restocking existing programs. HSE managers can replenish their solution supply without replacing the entire apparatus.
The FT-31 solution is the sensitivity solution: it verifies that the participant can detect the bitter agent before the test begins. If the user cannot detect the FT-31 solution, the qualitative test is not valid for that individual and another method must be used. The FT-32 solution is the actual fit test agent: it is nebulized inside the FT-14 test hood while the user wears their respirator and performs a standardized series of exercises. Any detection of bitterness indicates a facial leak.
Each 55 mL bottle allows multiple tests depending on the number of nebulizations required by the protocol. In practice, one bottle is generally sufficient for several complete tests. The box of 6 units is sized for HSE programs at mid-sized companies or organizations planning multiple annual testing sessions. The exact number of tests per bottle varies depending on the protocol used and the duration of each exercise sequence.
The FT-32 solution is used to test the fit of any tight-fitting facepiece respirator: filtering half-masks (N95, P100), reusable half-masks with cartridges, and full-face respirators. The bitter qualitative method is suitable for devices with an assigned protection factor (APF) of 10 or less. For respirators with higher APF values (e.g., full-face respirators, PAPR), quantitative fit testing is generally recommended. Consult OSHA 1910.134 or CSA Z94.4 for the requirements applicable to your workplace.
To run a complete fit testing program, recommended personal protective equipment includes powder-free black nitrile gloves 3.9 mils (GL7004), Solus S1101SGAF clear anti-fog safety glasses (YAS1101), MAX 33 dB disposable polyurethane earplugs (OA1100), disposable TYVEK 400 coverall with hood (VTY127SWH) and Keep Kleen 8 mils CFIA-approved nitrile gloves (GL7008). These products are available under the "Accessories" section at the bottom of the page.
To complete your fit testing kit, respirator maintenance accessories available at Sylprotec include 3M alcohol-free cleaning wipes 504 (R504), North alcohol-free cleaning wipes 7003 for half-mask (RN7003) and Zenith alcohol-free cleaning wipes 503 (R503).
