MSA Altair 4X multigas detector for the detection of hazardous gases in confined space. This device detects explosive gases, oxygen (O₂), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S). Manufacturer code: 10107602.
This type of tool is usually used for confined space work and for the detection of explosive or hazardous gas leaks. This device is class 482801 and class 482881 CSA approved by Canadian and American standards. It is certified for hazardous locations as defined by CSA Class I, Div. 1, Groups A, B, C & D. It also meets CSA C22.2 NO. 152 concerning combustible gas detection instruments, and is certified ANSI 12.13.01-2000 for its performance requirements for combustible gas detectors.
This multigas detector is equipped with MSA XCell cells which can last more than 4 years. It has a quick response time and a reset time in less than 15 seconds. It features three alarms: sound (volume up to 95 dB), visual (4 LED bulbs) and vibration. It has a backlit LCD screen. Sturdy, lightweight, dust- and waterproof, it saves up to the last 500 readings of the event log and comes with the free MSA Link software to retrieve the detector's data.
It is equipped with a lithium-ion polymer rechargeable battery with a 24-hour lifetime (in a controlled environment) and a charge time of less than 4 hours. It withstands a 6 m (20 ft) fall. Keep in optimal conditions: -10°C to +40°C (14°F to 104°F), 15% to 90% relative humidity (non-condensing).
You must always verify that your gas detector is working before each use. This test is called a "bump test". To do so, you need a fixed-flow regulator (DETEC4GR) and a cylinder containing the 4 calibration gases (DETEC4GG). In addition, a calibration by a specialized firm is required every six (6) months.
To take a measurement in a very deep confined space, it is possible to check the ambient air quality before workers go down. This requires adding a pump and the right length of tubing. These items are not included in the kit but are available on demand.
The Altair 4X measures four parameters: explosive gases (LEL), oxygen (O₂), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) — the main atmospheric hazards found in confined spaces.
A verification bump test is mandatory before each use, using the regulator (DETEC4GR) and the calibration gas cylinder (DETEC4GG). A full calibration by a specialized firm is required every six months.
Yes. By adding a pump and the right length of tubing (not included, available on demand), it is possible to check the ambient air quality at depth before workers descend into the confined space.
For compliant use of the detector, first see the fixed-flow MSA RP regulator (DETEC4GR) and the 4-gas calibration cylinder (DETEC4GG), essential for the bump test before each use. To get everything at once, the complete Altair 4X kit (DETEC4GC) combines the detector with its calibration accessories.
Under "Accessories" at the bottom of the page, complete your confined space equipment with the manhole ventilation assembly (RA9510), the manhole barrier (EPTBB) and the Peakworks 6 D-ring confined space harness (FPH2000APLE) stored in its carry bag (FPBAG).
