Safety role of the North chin strap
Accessories have been designed to help users meet task-specific requirements. The chin strap provides additional hard hat retention in situations where there is a risk of the helmet falling off: it prevents the helmet from becoming a falling object. Any worker required to wear fall protection equipment on a daily basis should also wear a chin strap.

The chin strap is made of nylon, a strong and rigid polyamide quite resilient to mechanical forces. It also offers good resistance to fatigue strength, good gliding properties and quite a resistance to wear and tear — ideal qualities for an accessory subjected to daily use.
Maintenance of the hard hat chin strap
According to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, one shall never draw the chin strap over the brim or peak of the helmet; never unfasten it to fasten it over the brim, and never stretch it over the brim. The CSA Z94.1-15 standard states that one shall inspect its head protection equipment daily. Clean the chin strap with lukewarm water and a mild soap (dish soap).
