This fluorescent yellow flagman raincoat meets the new Transports Québec standard which came into effect in December 2014. This 300-denier oxford polyester safety wear has been lined with polyurethane (PU) to provide water-resistance. The manufacturer grants this product a waterproof rating of 5000 mm, i.e. it can withstand the pressure of a 5 m water column. A waterproof rating is granted when a material has been tested under the pressure of a cylinder filled with water, in this case, 5 m high of water. This height defines the limit at which the material stops being resistant and water starts passing through.
All seams have been taped and heat-sealed. The coat was also fully mesh-lined for more comfort.
Reflective stripes and visibility:
This water-resistant coat has been provided with altering silver retroreflective stripes and fluorescent orange stripes. Each one of them has a width of 50 mm (2 in.). This raincoat has two front vertical stripes, back X-shaped stripes, three horizontal stripes around the waist, and three stripes around each arm. The collar is in a contrasting fluorescent orange.
Fluorescent yellow (or that safety greenish yellow) is quite visible during daylight and in poor natural light conditions, e.g. at dawn or dusk. In most cases, this yellow ensures a high contrast with most backgrounds. Since bright yellow is lighter than orange, it can be perceived more easily at night, yet reflective stripes will always be best in the dark.
Fluorescent orange is quite visible during daylight and in bright artificial lighting conditions. In most cases, it ensures a high contrast with most backgrounds. However, bright orange is less visible at night and in poor lighting conditions, be it natural or artificial, e.g. at dawn or dusk.
Silver retroreflective stripes are the most visible there is in poor lighting conditions, be it natural or
Design:
This raincoat features a full front zipper with hook-and-loop plackets on the flap. It also features underarm zippers easily adjusted which maintains comfort during hot weather. There is also a chest pocket with a pen slot, or other small tools, a clear ID pocket, and shoulder radiophone clip strap on each side.
This PU lined oxford polyester raincoat is said to be manufactured with a 300-deniers yarn; in layman’s terms, it is a medium-weight coat which is lightweight enough to offer comfort but is heavyweight enough to offer an effective protection. By definition, 300 deniers refer to the weight in grams of 9,000 m of the yarn used to make this coat, that is, 300 deniers equal 300 g. The manufacturer, Pioneer®, is unable to provide the polyurethane liner’s thickness.
Regarding the
Water-resistance:
Polyurethane-lined waterproof safety wear is usually worn by workers who may be exposed to remote risks of chemical splashes. PU is lightweight and porous; it’s thus ideal to manufacture light and breathable workwear. Yet, during heavy rains and windstorms, PU tends to get waterlogged and lose all its water-resistant property. Once overloaded, polyurethane lets water leach into the raincoat under any pressure, e.g. by leaning on something or bending over. Given the responsibilities flagmen take, a breathable raincoat is a must.
Maintenance:
This raincoat should always be machine-washed in a delicate setting with cold or lukewarm water, and a gentle soap. Never use bleaching agents or fabric softeners on this coat. It should also be air-dried in a sheltered spot out of direct sunlight. Never tumble dry, iron or dry clean this raincoat.
