The 3M 601 Fit Test Adapter is an essential accessory for performing quantitative fit tests (PortaCount or equivalent) on 3M reusable half facepiece and full facepiece respirators equipped with bayonet cartridge and filter retention devices. The 601 adapter allows the measuring equipment to connect directly to the inside of the mask through a plastic tube, suction cups, and a retention clip, without having to drill the mask. It is compatible with 3M reusable respirators of the 6000, 6500, 7000, and 7500 series, as well as the FF-400 facepiece.
3M Manufacturer Code: 7000001945, model: 601
The 601 adapter is sold individually and contains the adapter, a flexible plastic tube, suction cups, and a retention clip. Installation is non-destructive - the adapter is installed temporarily without permanently modifying the mask. A 3M particulate filter (not included) is required to perform the fit test. For testing, it is recommended to use a P100 filter such as the 2296 (reference R2296) to ensure valid results. This adapter is intended for professional use only, as part of a respiratory protection program compliant with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 and CSA Z94.4.
Verify that the tube is intact, the suction cups adhere properly, and the retention clip works correctly. Ensure the adapter is correctly positioned in the mask before starting the test. Clean the adapter after each use with a slightly damp cloth. Do not immerse in water. Store away from dust in its original packaging.
Quantitative fit testing objectively measures the mask fit factor by counting particles inside and outside the mask with a specialized instrument (PortaCount), without the participant needing to perceive a taste or odor. The 3M 601 adapter is specifically designed for this type of quantitative test. Qualitative fit testing, on the other hand, uses bitter (Bitrex, FT-30 kit) or sweet (saccharin, FT-10 kit) solutions that the participant can detect by taste. Both types of tests are recognized by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 and CSA Z94.4, but quantitative testing is generally considered more precise.
Yes, the 601 adapter is compatible with half facepieces and full facepieces from 3M series 6000, 6500, 7000, and 7500, as well as the FF-400 facepiece. The installation procedure may vary slightly depending on the mask type. For full facepieces, the adapter attaches to one of the bayonet ports. Refer to the instructions for use included in the packaging for the detailed procedure specific to each mask model.
A 3M particulate filter is required to perform quantitative fit testing with the 601 adapter. It is recommended to use a P100 filter, such as the 2296 filter (reference R2296), to ensure valid results. The filter must be installed on the mask port not occupied by the 601 adapter. The filter is not included with the adapter and must be ordered separately. Consult the PortaCount protocol or the measuring equipment used to confirm specific filter requirements.
For performing quantitative fit tests, protect the occupational health technician with powder-free class 2 medical nitrile gloves (PS706), Stealth Uvex safety glasses with clear anti-fog lenses (YG3960C), 312 uncorded disposable earplugs (OA1250), a neoprene-coated bib neoprene apron (VT1287), and Keep Kleen 8 mil nitrile gloves (GL7008).
