The D-size alkaline battery (LBD) is the largest of the 1.5-volt cylindrical batteries, designed for power-hungry devices that require very high capacity and long runtime. It is the size used in large flashlights, lanterns, powerful radios and various high-consumption handheld equipment. Thanks to its large size, the D battery stores far more energy than a C or an AA, ensuring extended runtime even for the most demanding devices.
Alkaline technology provides a stable voltage and a long shelf life, a valuable asset for backup devices such as large emergency flashlights or lanterns that must stay ready for a long time without use. Keeping D batteries in reserve in an emergency kit is a sensible precaution.
Beyond its capacity, the D battery is the go-to choice for power-hungry devices.
Its large size stores far more energy than a C or an AA, greatly extending the runtime of large flashlights, lanterns and powerful radios.
Alkaline chemistry holds a stable 1.5-volt output and offers a good shelf life, ready to use when needed.
The D-size alkaline battery is used everywhere power-hungry devices must stay powered:
Insert the battery according to the polarity (+ and −) shown in the device's compartment, and replace all the batteries in a device at the same time rather than mixing a new and a used cell. Store spare batteries in a dry, temperate place, away from metal objects. Remove the batteries from a device unused for a long period to avoid any risk of leakage, and recycle used batteries through local programs.
Both provide 1.5 volts, but the D is larger and stores more energy, for more power-hungry devices. The sizes are not interchangeable.
Large flashlights, lanterns, powerful radios and high-consumption handheld devices are among the most common uses.
Store them dry and cool, and remove them from a device that will be unused for a long period.
Depending on your devices, it can be handy to keep different battery sizes in reserve; also see a C 1.5 V alkaline battery (LBC), an AA 1.5 V alkaline battery (LBAA), an AAA 1.5 V alkaline battery (LBAAA), a 9 V alkaline battery (LB9), an Exit sign with battery (LUMB), a replacement battery (LBLUM), a single 9 W spotlight (LUMT1) or a 6 V 36 W unit (LU362MT).
