Ultrasonic thickness gauge - Accurate measurement of metals and non-metallic materials

This ultrasonic thickness gauge allows you to quickly and accurately measure the thickness of a wide variety of materials: steel, cast iron, aluminum, copper, zinc, silica glass, polyethylene, PVC, gray cast iron, and spheroidal graphite cast iron. Thanks to its advanced ultrasonic technology and digital display, the device provides reliable readings without the risk of visual error.

Indispensable for industry, equipment maintenance, preventive inspections, and wear detection, it is an essential tool for ensuring the safety and compliance of metal structures and parts.

Special features of the thickness gauge for metals and non-metallic materials

This gauge benefits from an exclusive microcomputer LSI circuit and a crystal time base, optimizing measurement accuracy. Its digital display simplifies reading and eliminates the risk of misinterpretation.

The device also displays the ultrasonic velocity at the touch of a button, allowing the setting to be automatically adjusted according to the material being evaluated.

Operating with wideband sensitivity, it is compatible with probes of multiple frequencies, offering essential versatility for different types of surfaces and densities.

The gauge includes:

  • One bottle of ultrasonic coupling agent (4 oz),
  • One hard carrying case,
  • Batteries required for operation.

Properties of the gauge for metals, plastics, etc.

  • Measuring range: 0.05 to 7.9 in / 1.5 to 200 mm (steel #45)
  • Velocity range: 500 to 9000 m/s
  • Automatic calibration according to material
  • High reception sensitivity allowing detection of signals from various probes
  • High accuracy on metal surfaces and semi-rigid materials
  • Robust construction for industrial or construction site use

Applications for a thickness gauge

This instrument is ideal for:

  • Preventive maintenance in industry,
  • Corrosion and wear inspections,
  • Checking the thickness of tank walls, pipes, tanks, and metal structures,
  • Engineering work,
  • Metal manufacturing and processing workshops,
  • Inspection of non-metallic materials such as engineering plastics.

It allows you to quickly identify weakened areas and loss of thickness, and to ensure compliance with safety standards.

Restrictions related to the ultrasonic thickness gauge

  • Do not use on very rough or uneven surfaces, as this may affect the propagation of ultrasound.
  • Proper application of the ultrasonic coupling agent is essential for reliable readings.
  • Certain complex geometries (very tight curves, small tubes) may make measurements less accurate.
  • The device is not designed to measure soft or absorbent materials such as rubber or foam.

Maintenance and service life of the ultrasonic gauge for metals and non-metallic products

To ensure the longevity of the gauge:

  • Clean the probe after each use and remove any excess coupling agent.
  • Store the device in its hard case to protect it from shocks, dust, and temperature variations.
  • Replace the batteries as soon as the display becomes dim.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture or corrosive environments.

Regular maintenance ensures measurement accuracy and extends the life of the device.

FAQ – Ultrasonic thickness gauge

1. What materials can I measure with this ultrasonic gauge?

This gauge is compatible with a wide variety of rigid materials: steel, cast iron, aluminum, copper, zinc, silica glass, polyethylene, PVC, gray cast iron, and spheroidal graphite cast iron. It works on most metals and many engineering plastics, as long as the material transmits ultrasound correctly.

2. Is it necessary to use a coupling agent to measure thickness?

Yes. Ultrasonic coupling is essential to ensure optimal contact between the probe and the surface, allowing for proper transmission of the ultrasonic waves. Without coupling, the reading may be inaccurate or impossible. A 4 oz bottle of coupling is included with the device.

3. Can the gauge detect internal corrosion or thickness loss?

Yes. The device measures the total thickness of the material, which allows it to identify thinning due to corrosion, even if it is not visible from the outside. It is frequently used to inspect pipes, tanks, vessels, welded structures, and surfaces exposed to wear.

4. Does the device need to be calibrated before use?

Automatic calibration is built in and is performed quickly depending on the material being measured. However, for critical measurements, it is recommended to use a reference sample or calibration plate.

This ensures optimal accuracy in demanding industrial environments.

5. Is the probe replaceable?

Yes. The probe can be replaced if worn or damaged. The TM8811-PROBE model is available as a compatible replacement probe. A probe in good condition ensures better accuracy and consistent performance.
