The 3M Speedglas 9100X auto-darkening filter is built for professional welders who demand reliable eye protection. It replaces the optical filter in the 9100 series welding helmets, including FX 9100, FX-Air 9100, 9100 QR, 9100 MP, 9100 Air, M-407SG, and M-409SG models. The viewing area measures 2.1 in × 4.2 in (54 × 107 mm) and covers shades 5 and 8 through 13, giving welders the flexibility to match optical protection to every process.

The three arc sensors deliver an ultra-fast switching speed of 0.1 ms at 23 °C (73 °F), virtually eliminating the risk of unprotected arc exposure. The resting light shade is shade 3, providing a clear view between weld passes. Permanent UV and infrared protection equivalent to shade 13 is maintained at all times, even when the sensors detect no arc. The CR2032 battery provides up to 2,500 hours of service, reducing downtime for replacements.
This filter is compliant with ANSI Z87.1-2010 and CSA Z94.3, the two key standards for welding eye protection in North America. Five adjustable sensitivity levels allow operators to fine-tune arc detection response based on the ambient lighting at their workstation.
Metal fabrication and boilermaking: MIG/MAG welding, shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), and spot welding on mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
Structural construction and field work: on-site welding in environments with variable natural and artificial lighting, flame cutting operations.
Industrial maintenance: equipment repair, component build-up, and weld grinding using the integrated grinding mode.
Pipe and pressure vessel fabrication: TIG welding on stainless steel requiring high-quality optical protection and accurate color rendering.
Welding training centers: vocational and technical schools where filter reliability is essential to safe skill development in arc welding.
The large 54 × 107 mm viewing area improves joint preparation visibility and weld bead tracking. The shade 3 resting state keeps the view bright between passes, reducing eye fatigue during long work sessions. The adjustable clearing delay, ranging from 40 ms to 1,300 ms, allows operators to avoid glare when the filter returns to its light state after each arc.
Compliance with ANSI Z87.1-2010 and CSA Z94.3 confirms that this filter meets occupational eye protection requirements set by health and safety regulators across North America. The permanent shade 13 UV and IR protection shields the eyes even during brief unintended exposure to welding arcs or other intense light sources.
The standard CR2032 battery is widely available and replaces in seconds without tools. Clean the optical surface with a soft, non-abrasive cloth. Inspect the filter before each use and replace it if scratches, deformation, or visible cracks are present. Avoid storing the filter in extreme temperatures between uses.
The 9100X filter is designed for TIG welding with a tungsten electrode, MIG/MAG welding with shielding gas, shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), spot welding, grinding, and flame cutting. The five adjustable sensitivity levels allow you to optimize arc detection response based on the process used and the ambient lighting conditions at your workstation.
Yes, the 9100X filter is designed for all 3M Speedglas 9100 series welding helmets, including FX 9100, FX-Air 9100, 9100 QR, 9100 MP, 9100 Air, M-407SG, and M-409SG. It is not compatible with Speedglas 9100XXi or Adflo helmets, which use filters with different dimensions.
The 9100X filter signals a low battery through irregular darkening behavior or an indicator on the test card. The rated battery life is 2,500 hours. We recommend testing the filter with the helmet's test card before each shift and replacing the battery at the first signs of weakness. CR2032 batteries are available at most hardware stores and pharmacies.
To complete your welding personal protective equipment, we recommend the Endura Pro gloves (G378GKGVBE), the mechanic gloves MXVSB (GMXVSB), the Virtua Max safety glasses (YA11514), the coverall coverall V1766, and the Laser Lite corded earplug (OA1101C). Find all these accessories under "Accessories" at the bottom of the page.
To keep your Speedglas 9100 welding helmet in top condition, also consider the inner protection plate (R06-0200-30), the outer protection plate (R06-0200-51), and the carrying bag (RSG90).
