For frequent grinding between welds, an accessible clear visor and neck coverage matter alongside welding-filter selection. The 3M Speedglas G5-01 46-0099-35 heavy-duty welding helmet is aimed at heavy work where the head, neck and face receive a lot of spatter. It comes with a 46-0700-65 rigid neck protector and a 46-0700-80 fabric head cover that cover the top and back of the head. The helmet is sold without a welding filter: according to 3M, the G5-01 is fitted with a G5TW or G5VC filter or a passive filter of shade 10, 11, 12 or 13. Once equipped, it is used for metal processing and repair, welding and grinding.
G5-01 was designed around welders who grind frequently and work with substantial spatter. Its welding shield flips up to reveal the clear visor, useful for joint preparation, pass inspection and metal finishing. This continuity avoids removing the entire headpiece at every change of task.
Coverage is another reason to select this reference. The rigid neck cover and fabric head cover are supplied with the helmet, supplementing the shell around areas exposed to spatter. More extensive or leather coverage shown in the range remains separately supplied. It should be selected for the workstation rather than assumed to be in the case.
The 46-0099-35 also retains a choice of filter and respiratory system. G5TW and G5VC technologies serve different preferences for tack welding or colour perception. Their modes are only available after the chosen filter has been fitted. The helmet alone does not supply an Adflo blower.
3M targets metal fabrication and processing, general manufacturing, heavy infrastructure and industrial maintenance. The neck protector and head cover make the most sense in boilermaking, mining equipment repair or crusher maintenance, where spatter comes from the side and from above. The helmet also suits crews who already own G5-01 filters and want to renew the shell and its protection without buying another filter.
Use the welding helmet only between -5 and +55 °C. Do not use it where contact with an open flame is possible. Without a welding filter, the helmet is not ready for welding and does not protect against arc radiation. Install a filter approved for the G5-01 and its plates before any use. 3M excludes laser welding and heavy overhead work that exposes the wearer to molten metal. This helmet alone provides no respiratory protection.

For the G5-01, 3M provides the G5TW and G5VC auto-darkening filters as well as a passive filter of shade 10, 11, 12 or 13. Install the selected filter with its protection plates, adjust the suspension, then attach the neck protector and head cover. Check the helmet tilt and the absence of light around the filter before starting.
G5-01 platform, model 46-0099-35, polyphthalamide (PPA) shell, black colour. Packed weight: 2.962 lb / 1.344 kg. The complete helmet assembled with an approved filter meets ANSI Z87.1; CSA Z94.3 compliance applies to the G5-01 fitted with a G5TW, G5VC or passive shade 10, 11, 12 or 13 filter, never to the shell without a filter.
Set headgear support, face clearance and shield positions before adjusting the added filter. G5-01 controls are intended to remain accessible while wearing the helmet and gloves. Check that the raised shield remains stable and the clear visor is clean before preparing a grinding operation.
In an approved respiratory assembly, G5-01 ducts allow air to be directed towards the face or visor and distributed around the head. This capability requires a supplied, correctly assembled system, not a disconnected helmet. Check the face seal, tube and supply compatibility before respiratory use. Do not modify the helmet or retainers to accept a filter or connection from another family.
Inspect the shell, neck protector and head cover before each use; a holed or burnt fabric, a cracked shell or a damaged attachment must be replaced. Clean the shell without solvents, immersion or direct spraying. After the shift, remove grinding dust from the head cover and store the helmet in a dry place, away from spatter.
No. It is sold without a welding filter, with a rigid neck protector and a fabric head cover.
3M provides the G5TW and G5VC filters as well as a passive filter of shade 10, 11, 12 or 13.
The 46-0700-65 rigid protector covers the neck; the 46-0700-80 fabric head cover covers the top and back of the head against spatter.
No. The 46-0099-35 is a welding helmet only; respiratory protection must be selected separately according to the workstation assessment.
The G5-01 welding shield flips up to expose the clear grinding visor. A welding filter still needs to be added to this reference. Within a complete approved respiratory system, tasks can be changed while retaining the headpiece and its air supply.
For preparation around this workstation, protect the eyes during tasks away from the welding arc with eyewear (YAU3200); protect the hands while handling cool parts with gloves (GS13TAGPU); keep hearing protection available near the workstation with earplugs (OA1101); select respiratory protection for assessed dust hazards during non-welding tasks with respirator (R9211); mark access routes around the work area with marking (ECT3YE7).
To equip and maintain this G5-01, the Speedglas G5-01 auto-darkening filter (R46-0000-30i) fits in the helmet, while the G5 sweatband (R46-0200-54) in a bag of 3 and the large comfort headrest (R46-0400-55) improve wear. The G5-01 hinge mechanism (R46-0400-56) in a bag of 2, the black outer visor frame (R46-0700-63) and the G5-01 ratchet headgear (R46-0400-54) replace worn helmet parts.
