Fall protection: the single-leg shock absorbing lanyard for fixed work positions

3M purchase code: 7012817383, model: 1341006C

The Protecta 3M 1341006C web shock absorbing lanyard is a single-leg 4 ft (1.22 m) lanyard built for fall protection at height. Its red polyester web houses an energy absorber inside a transparent pack that deploys progressively during a fall to reduce the arresting forces transmitted to the worker.

It connects by means of one steel spring-loaded snap hook at the harness attachment point and one steel rebar hook at the anchorage end, ideal for tying off to large structures or rebar.

  • Length: 4 ft (1.22 m)
  • Capacity: 121 to 310 lb (54.9 to 140.6 kg)
  • Web material: polyester
  • Connectors: 1 steel spring-loaded snap hook + 1 steel rebar hook
  • Internal tear-action shock absorber
  • Colour: red and transparent
  • Standard: CSA Z259.11
  • Country of origin: USA

Materials and construction

The main webbing is made of high-tenacity red polyester, a fabric known for its resistance to abrasion, ultraviolet rays and moisture, which extends the service life of the lanyard in industrial settings. The tear-away energy absorber is housed in a transparent protective cover that allows quick visual inspection of its condition and reveals any deployment after a fall. Both connectors are made of corrosion-treated high-strength steel: a snap hook on the harness side and a rebar hook on the anchorage side, able to attach to large structures. The assembly uses reinforced stitching and is certified to the CSA Z259.11 standard.

Understanding the fall clearance window

Before using this energy-absorbing lanyard, calculate the fall clearance, that is, the free space required below the anchorage point to arrest a fall before the worker strikes the ground or an obstacle. This clearance window adds up from several elements: the length of the lanyard, the deployment of the energy absorber, the height of the worker, the dorsal D-ring slide and a safety margin. A miscalculation is one of the most common causes of serious injuries at height, even with compliant equipment.

Example for this 4 ft lanyard: the lanyard (4 ft) plus the absorber deployment (4 ft) plus the worker height (6 ft) plus a safety margin (1.5 ft) give a total clearance of about 15.5 ft (4.7 m) below an overhead anchorage. In low-clearance situations, choose a self-retracting lifeline instead.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about the single-leg shock absorbing lanyard

Does this lanyard meet Canadian standards?

Yes, this product is certified to CSA Z259.11, ensuring compliance for construction sites and industrial environments in Canada.

What is the capacity of this lanyard?

This lanyard is designed for a worker whose total weight, including tools, is between 121 and 310 lb (54.9 to 140.6 kg).

When should I choose a single-leg lanyard over a double-leg Y lanyard?

The single-leg lanyard suits fixed single-anchor workstations and restraint applications where the worker does not move between several anchor points. For repeated transitions at height where 100% tie-off is required, choose a double-leg Y lanyard instead.

What is the required fall clearance with this 4 ft lanyard?

Adding the lanyard (4 ft), the absorber deployment (4 ft), the worker height (6 ft) and a safety margin (1.5 ft), you need about 15.5 ft (4.7 m) of clearance below an overhead anchorage.

What happens if my anchor is at foot level?

This is the most dangerous scenario, fall factor 2: the free fall can reach twice the lanyard length. This energy absorbing lanyard is designed to dissipate the energy of a severe fall and reduce arresting forces, making it suitable when the anchor is at foot level.

Complementary suggestions for the lanyard:

Beyond fall arrest, equip the worker from head to toe: protect their hands with cut-resistant gloves (G100), their eyes with safety eyewear (YA12E90801), and their hearing in noisy areas with earplugs (O1100) or earmuffs (OPH10B); on a traffic worksite, add a high-visibility vest (VV53).

To complete your fall protection system, combine your lanyard with reliable anchors: a connector (FPA826), a secondary anchor (FPAF075N) or a fitting (FPA822). Connect it to an ExoFit harness (FPH140114XCALP) or the model (FPH140102XCAL), and post the mandatory-use sign (ECO130).
