Designed for linemen and utility pole climbers, this DBI-SALA(R) adjustable rope positioning lanyard wraps around the pole and connects to the side positioning D-rings of a belt or harness. The worker leans back in tension to work hands-free. The length adjusts one-handed with a rope adjuster to match the pole size. This is a work-positioning device, NOT a fall arrest device.
This lanyard also comes in other versions depending on material and connector: a kernmantle rope model with aluminum hook (FPL1234071) and a nylon rope model (1234080, 1234081), as well as a web model (FPL1231016C). Consult the products activated by the green hyperlink or the Lanyards tab.
The lanyard is made of a durable kernmantle rope with a nylon core and polyester sheath, abrasion-resistant and fitted with a protective sleeve. It has a built-in wear indicator in the rope that signals when to replace it. A self-locking snap hook is fitted at one end, while the other carries a rope adjuster with a locking snap hook in sturdy zinc-plated steel. The rope is 2.44 m (8 ft) long.
To position himself, the climber passes the lanyard around the pole, connects the hardware to the side D-rings, then adjusts the length with the adjuster until he obtains a firm support. He can then lean back in tension and work hands-free. The 8 ft (2.44 m) rope offers an adjustment range suited to climbing and holding on utility poles.
This positioning lanyard does NOT replace a fall arrest device. Free fall must remain limited to 2 ft (0.6 m). For fall protection, it must be used WITH a separate fall arrest system: a full-body harness with side D-rings and a fall arrest device (self-retracting lifeline, rope grab, or pole fall-limiting device such as the Cynch-Lok(TM)). Load capacity is 310 lb (141 kg) including the user, clothing and tools. This model meets OSHA 1910.268(g), 1926.502(e) and 1926.959 requirements for positioning devices.
Like any protective equipment, this lanyard must be inspected before each use: rope, wear indicator, sleeve, adjuster, snap hook, hook and labels. An exposed wear indicator, or a cut, burned or frayed rope requires immediate removal from service. A formal annual inspection by a qualified person other than the user is required, as well as a complete inspection after any fall before returning the lanyard to service.
Here are the most common questions about this positioning lanyard for pole climbers.
Kernmantle rope (1234070, 1234071) has a nylon core and a braided polyester sheath, sturdy and abrasion-resistant. Nylon rope models (1234080, 1234081) use a solid nylon rope. The choice depends on the climber's preference and type of work.
This model (FPL1234070) has a zinc-plated steel snap hook, sturdy and economical. Model 1234071 uses an aluminum hook, lighter to reduce fatigue at height.
No. It is a work-positioning device that keeps the worker supported against the pole. It must always be combined with a separate fall arrest system (full-body harness and fall arrest device).
Maximum capacity is 310 lb (141 kg), including the user, clothing and tools.
To complete the protection of the lineman positioning himself on the pole, plan for clear (YA12E93101) and tinted (YAZ2600) safety glasses depending on lighting, TenActiv (GSTACXPNRT) and Dexterity (GS18KGFN) cut-resistant gloves against edges and cables, a type 2 class E hard hat (TA222), as well as arc-rated flame-resistant clothing, a shirt (V131) and pants (V7764), against the electrical hazard.
To build a complete system, connect this positioning lanyard to an ExoFit NEX SEAT-BELT 4D harness for lineworkers (FPH1113653CALP) and to a fall arrest device, either a Nano-Lok self-retracting lifeline (FPLR3101507), or the Cynch-Lok pole fall-limiting device (FPL1204057). Then choose the version suited to your work: rope lanyard with aluminum snap hook (FPL1234071), nylon rope lanyard (FPL1234080) or rope lanyard with large steel hook (FPL1234081).
