The 3M Versaflo M-409SG helmet assembly is designed for intensive welding environments where durable protection is essential. It combines the Versaflo Series M facepiece with a robust leather shroud and leather hood, paired with a Speedglas Series 9100 welding shield. The leather shroud offers superior resistance to sparks and molten metal spatter compared to flame-resistant fabric models.
3M Manufacturer Code: M-409SG, Model: Series M Versaflo Speedglas
This assembly is 10% lighter and provides a larger viewing area than the 3M Series L L-905SG welding helmet. The flip-up visor allows easy communication in non-hazardous areas without removing the full assembly. The leather shroud and hood meet the ASTM D6413 standard for flame resistance.
When used with a NIOSH-approved air source, this assembly helps protect the operator against certain airborne contaminants, particularly welding fumes. It complies with ANSI Z89.1 Type I Class G for head protection and ANSI Z87 for welding arc protection. The assembly is compatible with Versaflo and Adflo 3M powered air purifying respirators, as well as 3M supplied-air respirators.
For optimal eye protection during welding, 3M recommends using this assembly with a Speedglas Series 9100 auto-darkening filter, sold separately. The natural color technology of the 9100XXi filter provides improved visibility of weld details.
High-intensity welding: MIG, TIG, electrode and plasma welding in metal fabrication shops exposed to heavy spatter and powerful arcs.
Heavy industry: work in steelmaking, shipbuilding and oil industries where equipment durability is paramount.
Cutting and grinding: torch cutting, plasma cutting and grinding operations producing sparks and projections requiring reinforced protection.
Industrial electrical work: work near electrical arcs and panels where complete head protection is required by safety regulations.
The durable leather shroud offers superior abrasion and spatter resistance compared to flame-resistant fabric models.
Leather proves more resistant to repeated spark impacts during intensive or prolonged welding operations.
The longer service life of the leather shroud reduces replacement costs in intensive production environments.
10% lighter than the 3M Series L L-905SG welding helmet to reduce cervical fatigue.
Enlarged viewing window for better situational awareness during welding operations.
Flip-up visor facilitating communication without compromising overall protection.
The main difference lies in the shroud and hood material: the M-409SG uses durable leather, while the M-407SG uses flame-resistant fabric. The leather shroud of the M-409SG provides better resistance to molten metal projections and intense sparks during high-performance welding. In return, the M-409SG is slightly heavier (5.1 lb vs 4.4 lb) due to the density of the leather. For intensive welding operations or high-spatter-risk environments, the M-409SG with leather shroud is generally recommended.
No, the Speedglas Series 9100 auto-darkening filter is not included in the M-409SG assembly and must be ordered separately. 3M offers several Speedglas Series 9100 filter models suited to different welding types, including the 9100X for standard protection and the 9100XXi for enhanced natural color visibility. The choice of filter depends on your welding type and visual protection requirements. Browse our Speedglas catalog at Sylprotec.com.
The M-409SG assembly is designed for use with Versaflo TR-300 and Adflo 3M powered air purifying respirators (PAPR), as well as 3M NIOSH-approved Type C and CE supplied-air respirators. It is compatible with most 3M Versaflo air supply systems. When used with an approved air source, this assembly helps protect the operator against welding fumes and other airborne contaminants. Verify compatibility with your specific system in the 3M technical documentation.
For optimal protection during intensive welding operations, our customers also choose: cut-resistant Dyneema gloves (GS13SXGPU) with PU coating for handling metal parts, Virtua Max safety eyewear (YA11514) with clear lenses for areas not covered by the mask, 3M 1100 disposable earplugs (O1100) without cord for hearing protection against welding noise, a flame-resistant orange ARC 2 coverall (V1765) for body protection against sparks and arcs, and Superior Touch nylon gloves with latex coating (GS13BKPUQ) as a work alternative.
For direct accessories from the Versaflo M and Speedglas 9100 product lines, we recommend the extended durability outer cover web (RM448) to extend your equipment's service life, the flame-resistant outer cover web (RM447) for high-risk environments, and the SG-90 carrying bag (RSG90) to protect your helmet during transport and storage.
