Fall protection: the single-leg shock absorbing lanyard for fixed work positions

3M purchase code: 7100328996, model: 1246568C

The DBI-SALA 3M 1246568C shock absorbing lanyard is a single-leg 3 ft (0.91 m) lanyard built for fall protection at height. Its yellow polyester web houses an energy absorber inside a black pack that deploys progressively during a fall to reduce the arresting forces transmitted to the worker.

It connects by means of two zinc-plated snap hooks: one at the anchorage end and one at the harness attachment point. The 3M IRF identification system makes equipment tracking and inspection easier throughout its service life.

  • Length: 3 ft (0.91 m)
  • Capacity: 132 to 310 lb (59.9 to 140.6 kg)
  • Web material: polyester
  • Connectors: 2 zinc-plated snap hooks
  • Internal tear-action shock absorber
  • Colour: yellow and black
  • Standard: CSA Z259.11
  • Country of origin: USA

For work requiring frequent movement between anchor points, we also offer the (double-leg Y-lanyard) model. This twin-arm configuration provides a 100% continuous connection, since the second arm is attached before the first is released.

Understanding the fall clearance window

Before using this energy-absorbing lanyard, calculate the fall clearance, that is, the free space required below the anchorage point to arrest a fall before the worker strikes the ground or an obstacle. This clearance window adds up from several elements: the length of the lanyard, the deployment of the energy absorber, the height of the worker, the dorsal D-ring slide and a safety margin. A miscalculation is one of the most common causes of serious injuries at height, even with compliant equipment.

Example for this 3 ft lanyard: the lanyard (3 ft) plus the absorber deployment (4 ft) plus the worker height (6 ft) plus a safety margin (1.5 ft) give a total clearance of about 14.5 ft (4.4 m) below an overhead anchorage. In low-clearance situations, choose a self-retracting lifeline instead.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about the single-leg shock absorbing lanyard

Does this lanyard meet Canadian standards?

Yes, this product is certified to CSA Z259.11, ensuring compliance for construction sites and industrial environments in Canada.

What is the capacity of this lanyard?

This lanyard is designed for a worker whose total weight, including tools, is between 132 and 310 lb (59.9 to 140.6 kg).

When should I choose a single-leg lanyard over a double-leg Y lanyard?

The single-leg lanyard suits fixed single-anchor workstations and restraint applications where the worker does not move between several anchor points. For repeated transitions at height where 100% tie-off is required, choose a double-leg Y lanyard (1246576c) instead.

What is the required fall clearance with this 3 ft lanyard?

Adding the lanyard (3 ft), the absorber deployment (4 ft), the worker height (6 ft) and a safety margin (1.5 ft), you need about 14.5 ft (4.4 m) of clearance below an overhead anchorage.

What happens if my anchor is at foot level?

This is the most dangerous scenario, fall factor 2: the free fall can reach twice the lanyard length. This 3M IRF energy absorbing lanyard is designed to dissipate the energy of a severe fall and reduce arresting forces, making it suitable when the anchor is at foot level.

Complementary suggestions for the lanyard:

Looking to optimize your fall protection system? For complete protection, combine your single-leg lanyard with reliable anchors: a permanent roof connector (FPA826), a temporary concrete anchor (FPAF075N), or a rugged fixed connector (FPA822). Complete your equipment with the mandatory harness sign (ECO130). For the harness to attach this lanyard to, consider the ExoFit X100 Class A harness (FPH140100XCA) or the Class AP model (FPH140101XCAP). Every component of the harness-lanyard-anchor assembly can save lives at height.
