Fall protection: the twin-leg Y shock absorbing lanyard for large structures

3M purchase code: 7100329199, model: 1246581C

The DBI-SALA 3M 1246581C twin-leg Y shock absorbing lanyard is a 6 ft (1.8 m) lanyard built for workers who must move from one anchor point to another while staying tied off at all times. Its yellow polyester web houses an energy absorber inside a black pack that deploys progressively during a fall to reduce the arresting forces transmitted to the worker.

This twin-arm configuration provides a 100% continuous connection, since the second arm is attached before the first is released. It connects by means of a zinc-plated snap hook at the harness attachment point and two zinc-plated open-jaw large hooks at the ends of the arms, designed to tie off to large-diameter structures such as beams or pipes. The 3M IRF identification system makes equipment tracking and inspection easier throughout its service life.

Total worker weight capacity, including clothing, tools and equipment, is 132 to 310 lb (59.9 to 140.6 kg). This product is compliant with CSA Z259.11.

Understanding the fall clearance window

Before using this energy-absorbing lanyard, calculate the fall clearance, that is, the free space required below the anchorage point to arrest a fall before the worker strikes the ground or an obstacle. This clearance window adds up from several elements: the length of the lanyard, the deployment of the energy absorber, the height of the worker, the dorsal D-ring slide and a safety margin. A miscalculation is one of the most common causes of serious injuries at height, even with compliant equipment.

For this 6 ft lanyard: the lanyard (6 ft) plus the absorber deployment (4 ft) plus the worker height (6 ft) plus a safety margin (1.5 ft) give a total clearance of about 17.5 ft (5.3 m) below an overhead anchorage. In low-clearance situations, choose a self-retracting lifeline instead.

Required fall clearance lanyard

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about the open-jaw hook twin-leg Y lanyard

Does this lanyard meet Canadian standards?

Yes, this product is compliant with CSA Z259.11 for construction sites and industrial environments in Canada.

What is the capacity of this lanyard?

This lanyard is designed for a worker whose total weight, including tools, is between 132 and 310 lb (59.9 to 140.6 kg).

Why choose an open-jaw hook over a standard hook?

The open-jaw hook offers a wider opening than a standard snap hook, allowing direct tie-off to large-diameter structures such as beams, pipes or rebar, without needing a dedicated anchor point.

What fall clearance is required?

About 17.5 ft (5.3 m) below an overhead anchorage. In low-clearance situations, choose a self-retracting lifeline instead.

What happens if my anchor is at foot level?

This is the most dangerous scenario, fall factor 2: the free fall can reach twice the lanyard length. This 3M IRF energy absorbing lanyard is designed to dissipate the energy of a severe fall and reduce arresting forces, making it suitable when the anchor is at foot level.

Complementary suggestions for the lanyard:

Beyond fall arrest, equip the worker from head to toe: protect their hands with cut-resistant gloves (GS10KLX), their eyes with safety eyewear (YAU3202), and their hearing in noisy areas with earplugs (OA101D) or earmuffs (OPH6B); on a traffic worksite, add a high-visibility vest (V695).

To complete your fall protection system, combine your lanyard with reliable anchors: a connector (FPA2190073), a anchor (FPA2199938), or a rugged fixed connector (FPA2103677); attach it to an ExoFit harness (FPH114012XCA) or the model (FPH111304XCAP), and post the mandatory sign (ECO130). Every component of the harness-lanyard-anchor assembly can save lives at height.
