The Protecta 3M hot work shock absorbing lanyard is a twin-leg Y lanyard built for environments exposing the equipment to heat, sparks or flames, such as welding or cutting. Its fire-resistant Kevlar fiber webbing withstands intense heat, while the energy absorber, housed in a pack protected by a Kevlar fiber cover, deploys progressively during a fall to reduce the arresting forces transmitted to the worker.
This twin-arm configuration provides a 100% continuous connection, since the second arm is attached before the first is released. It connects by means of a plated steel snap hook at the harness attachment point and two plated steel rebar hooks at the ends of the arms, resistant to corrosion.
Total worker weight capacity, including clothing, tools and equipment, is 121 to 310 lb (54.9 to 140.6 kg). A built-in fall indicator allows quick visual inspection to check if the lanyard has been impacted.
Before using this energy-absorbing lanyard, calculate the fall clearance, that is, the free space required below the anchorage point to arrest a fall before the worker strikes the ground or an obstacle. This clearance window adds up from several elements: the length of the lanyard, the deployment of the energy absorber, the height of the worker, the dorsal D-ring slide and a safety margin. A miscalculation is one of the most common causes of serious injuries at height, even with compliant equipment.
For the 4 ft model: about 15.5 ft (4.7 m) of clearance. For the 6 ft model (the worst case): the lanyard (6 ft) plus the absorber deployment (4 ft) plus the worker height (6 ft) plus a safety margin (1.5 ft) give a total clearance of about 17.5 ft (5.3 m) below an overhead anchorage. In low-clearance situations, choose a self-retracting lifeline instead.

Kevlar fiber withstands intense heat, sparks and flames, making it suitable for welding, torch cutting or work near heat sources, unlike standard polyester webbing which could melt or weaken.

A visual inspection of the absorber pack allows quick determination of whether the lanyard has sustained an impact force. If so, the lanyard must be removed from service immediately.

Beyond fall arrest, equip the worker from head to toe: protect their hands with cut-resistant gloves (GS13TAGPU), their eyes with safety eyewear (YG454), and their hearing in noisy areas with earplugs (OA101) or earmuffs (OPH6A); on a hot work site, add a high-visibility vest (VV50).
To complete your fall protection system, combine your lanyard with reliable anchors: a connector (FPA9501683), a anchor (FPA8510816), or a rugged fixed connector (FPA2104550); attach it to an ExoFit harness (FPH140309XCAP) or the model (FPH140320XCAP), and post the mandatory sign (ECO130). Every component of the harness-lanyard-anchor assembly can save lives at height.
