The 3M Speedglas 9100XXi auto-darkening filter represents the leading generation in professional welding eye protection. Designed for Speedglas 9100 series welding helmets, including 9100, FX 9100, FX-Air 9100, 9100 MP, 9100 Air, M-407SG, and M-409SG models, it features an expanded viewing area of 2.8 in × 4.2 in (73 × 107 mm), providing 35% more vertical field of view than the 9100X filter, for superior visibility on every weld pass.

The 9100XXi's enhanced optical elements deliver better color distinction compared to previous generations, making it easier to inspect completed welds and monitor the weld bead in real time. Three arc sensors provide an ultra-fast switching speed of 0.1 ms at 23 °C (73 °F). The resting light shade is shade 3, maintaining a clear view between passes. Permanent UV and infrared protection equivalent to shade 13 is active at all times, regardless of arc detection status.
This filter is compliant with ANSI Z87.1 and CSA Z94.3. Five adjustable sensitivity levels and an adjustable clearing delay from 40 ms to 1,300 ms give welders full control over their visual experience. When used with the optional 9100XXi silver front panel, two memory modes and external grinding mode activation become available for advanced workflow control.
Precision metal fabrication: TIG welding on stainless steel, aluminum, and specialty alloys, where accurate color rendering is critical for tracking fine weld beads.
Aerospace and rail industries: orbital and semi-automatic welding on critical components, high-quality environments where visibility of the weld pool is essential to meet specifications.
Structural steel and boilermaking: MIG/MAG welding, stick welding (SMAW), and spot welding both on-site and in fabrication shops.
Advanced industrial maintenance: repair of high-value components, hard-facing operations, and precision grinding using external grinding mode activation with the silver front panel.
Professional welding training: training centers where the superior optical quality of the 9100XXi helps trainees read the weld pool and develop skills more quickly.
The large 73 × 107 mm viewing area significantly improves visibility during joint preparation and weld bead tracking. The 9100XXi's improved optical elements provide better color reproduction than previous-generation filters, reducing eye fatigue during extended sessions and improving inspection of completed welds. The adjustable clearing delay, from 40 ms to 1,300 ms, prevents glare when the filter returns to its light state after each arc.
Compliance with ANSI Z87.1 and CSA Z94.3 confirms this filter meets occupational eye protection requirements set by health and safety regulators across North America. The permanent shade 13 UV and IR protection shields the eyes at all times, even during brief unintended exposure to welding arcs or other intense light sources.
The standard CR2032 battery provides up to 1,800 hours of service and replaces in seconds without tools. Clean the optical surface with a soft, non-abrasive cloth. Inspect the filter before each use and replace it if scratches, deformation, or visible cracks appear. Avoid prolonged storage in extreme temperatures or direct sunlight.
Both filters offer shades 5 and 8 through 13 and the same 0.1 ms darkening speed. The main difference is the viewing area: the 9100XXi provides 73 × 107 mm versus 54 × 107 mm for the 9100X, giving 35% more vertical field of view. The 9100XXi also features improved optical elements for better color distinction and compatibility with the optional silver front panel for two memory modes and external grinding mode activation.
The 9100XXi filter is designed for 3M Speedglas 9100 series helmets, including 9100XXi, 9100, FX 9100, FX-Air 9100, 9100 MP, 9100 Air, M-407SG, and M-409SG. It is not designed for Adflo helmets or models outside the 9100 range. Please verify compatibility with your specific helmet model if needed before purchasing.
The two memory modes and external grinding mode activation are advanced features available only when the 9100XXi filter is used with the optional 3M Speedglas 9100XXi silver front panel, sold separately. These features allow saving two custom shade presets and switching to grinding mode from outside the helmet without lifting the visor. Without the silver front panel, the filter operates with standard shade and sensitivity settings.
