Cynch-Lok(TM) DBI-SALA(R) rope fall-limiting device for transmission poles

Designed by linemen, for linemen, the DBI-SALA(R) Cynch-Lok(TM) is a fall-limiting device for climbing wooden utility poles (electrical and telephone poles). This rope model fits transmission poles from 14 cm (5.5 in) to 77 cm (30.5 in) in diameter.

3M purchase code: 7100239619, 3M model number: 1204058.

This Cynch-Lok(TM) device is also available in other versions depending on the pole type and component: distribution rope rope (FPL1204057), distribution strap strap (FPL1204075), as well as replacement parts: inner lanyard (FPL1200136). Browse the products activated by the green hyperlink or check the Lanyards tab.

Thanks to its roller-adjustment system, it lets you climb, descend and pass obstacles with one hand, with an ergonomic, pinch-free grip. If you slip or lose your footing, the climbing rope "cynches" around the pole and limits the fall distance, in compliance with CSA Z259.14 (Type A and AB) and ASTM F887.

Materials and construction of the rope Cynch-Lok

The inner lanyard is a polyester kernmantle rope with a nylon and Technora core, resistant to cutting and abrasion. A movable abrasion-resistant sleeve extends the rope's service life. The rope has a built-in wear indicator: as soon as the beige inner core becomes visible, it is time to replace the component. The Saflok(TM) twist-lock carabiners and the stop hook are made of zinc-plated steel, strong and durable. Manufactured by Capital Safety (DBI-SALA(R) brand).

Icy or slippery poles

The Cynch-Lok(TM) is approved for dry, wet and icy poles. On an icy or slippery pole (grease, oil, tar, moss or vegetation), make sure the rear stop cleats stay in contact with the back of the pole and never approach the centre axis. As a pole's circumference decreases toward the top, the stop cleats must be continuously readjusted while climbing and descending, an adjustment made with one hand, without stopping.

Crossing obstacles safely

To pass a crossarm, a conduit or any other obstacle on the pole, use a secondary work-positioning lanyard to stay 100% tied off during the manoeuvre. Never expose yourself to a free fall of more than 2 ft (0.6 m). The Cynch-Lok(TM) one-hand adjustment makes it easy to cross obstacles without interrupting your progress.

A model for every pole diameter

The outer strap is easily swapped in the field to match the type and size of the pole being climbed, eliminating the need to carry several devices. This transmission model fits poles from 14 cm (5.5 in) to 77 cm (30.5 in) in diameter. The lanyard is 8 ft (2.44 m) long, with a load capacity of 141 kg (310 lb) including the user, clothing and tools.

An interchangeable-parts system

The Cynch-Lok(TM) is a modular system made up of an outer strap and an inner lanyard, both offered separately as replacement parts. The the nylon inner spare (FPL1200136) are offered separately. These components are interchangeable, letting you adapt a single device to different pole diameters and replace a worn part without repurchasing the complete assembly.

Inspection and maintenance

Like any fall-protection equipment, the Cynch-Lok(TM) must be inspected before each use: a visual inspection of every component (rope, connectors, carabiners, roller adjuster, stop cleats, labels). Check that the wear indicator is not showing (visible beige inner core). A formal annual examination by a qualified person other than the user is required, as well as a complete inspection after any fall before returning the device to service. Remove the device from service immediately if there is any doubt. Clean with water and mild soap, then air dry.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about the rope Cynch-Lok(TM)

Here are the most common questions about this pole fall-limiting device.

How is it different from a shock-absorbing fall-arrest lanyard?

The Cynch-Lok(TM) is a fall-limiting (pole positioning) device, not a shock-absorbing fall-arrest lanyard. It restrains the fall distance by "cynching" around the pole rather than deploying an energy absorber.

Does this model fit all poles?

This transmission model fits poles from 14 cm (5.5 in) to 77 cm (30.5 in) in diameter. For smaller-diameter distribution poles, choose model 1204057.

What body support should the Cynch-Lok(TM) connect to?

The manual allows connection to a body belt or to a full-body harness fitted with side positioning D-rings. The belt alone is now in decline: the full-body harness is the preferred solution, because it distributes forces across the shoulders, thighs and pelvis rather than the waist alone.

When should the rope be replaced?

As soon as the wear indicator (beige core) becomes visible, or immediately after a fall, the component must be replaced.

Complementary equipment suggestions

To complete the protection of the lineman climbing with the Cynch-Lok(TM), plan for clear (YA12E93101) and gray (YA12E93102) safety glasses depending on lighting, arc-rated (GS13FRNE) or TenActiv (GSTACXPNRT) cut-resistant gloves against edges and cables, a type 2 class E safety helmet (TA222), as well as arc-rated flame-resistant clothing, navy shirt (V131) and cargo pants (V7764), against electrical arc hazards.

To build a complete system, connect the Cynch-Lok(TM) to an ExoFit NEX SEAT-BELT 4D lineworker harness (FPH1113653CALP), then choose the version suited to the pole being climbed: distribution pole rope (FPL1204057), distribution pole strap (FPL1204075), and keep the inner replacement strap (FPL1200136) on hand.
