Designed for linemen and utility pole climbers, this adjustable web positioning lanyard from DBI-SALA(R) wraps around the pole and connects to the two lateral positioning D-rings of a belt or harness. The worker leans back into it under tension to work hands-free. The length is easily set with an adjuster, so the support can be matched to the pole size. This is a work positioning device, NOT a fall arrest device.
This lanyard also comes in other versions depending on material and connector: a kernmantle rope model with steel hook (FPL1234070), with aluminum hook (FPL1234071) and a nylon rope model (1234080, 1234081). See the products enabled by the green hyperlink or browse the Lanyards tab.
The lanyard is made of rugged, abrasion-resistant polyester webbing. It is fitted with easy-to-use self-locking snap hooks at each of its two ends. A sliding adjuster lets you set the desired length with one hand. The lanyard features a 3M(TM) Connected Safety ID for equipment tracking and inspection.
To get into position, the climber passes the lanyard around the pole, connects the snap hooks to the lateral D-rings, then adjusts the length with the adjuster until a firm support is reached. The worker can then lean back under tension and work hands-free. The 1.8 m (6 ft) lanyard offers an adjustment range suited to climbing and holding position on utility poles.
This positioning lanyard does NOT replace a fall arrest device. Free fall must stay limited to 2 ft (0.6 m). For fall protection, it must be used WITH a separate fall arrest system: a full-body harness with lateral D-rings and a fall arrest device (self-retracting lifeline, rope grab, or a pole fall-limiting device such as the Cynch-Lok(TM)). The load capacity is 310 lb (141 kg) including the user, clothing and tools. This positioning device meets OSHA requirements; refer to the product label and manufacturer instructions for applicable certifications.
Like any protective equipment, this lanyard must be inspected before each use: webbing, stitching, adjuster, snap hooks and labels. Any cut, burned or frayed webbing or damaged stitching requires immediate removal from service. A formal annual inspection by a qualified person other than the user is required, as well as a full inspection after any fall before returning the lanyard to service. Clean with water and mild soap, then air dry.
Here are the most common questions about this positioning lanyard for pole climbers.
The web model (FPL1231016C) uses polyester webbing with snap hooks at both ends, while models 1234070, 1234071, 1234080 and 1234081 use an adjustable rope with a connecting hook. The choice depends on the climber preference and the type of work.
No. It is a work positioning device that holds the worker in support against the pole. It must always be combined with a separate fall arrest system (full-body harness and fall arrest device).
The maximum capacity is 310 lb (141 kg), including the user, clothing and tools.
The length is set with one hand using the sliding adjuster, so the support can be matched to the pole size during the climb.
To complete the protection of the lineman positioning on the pole, plan for clear (YA12E91001) and gray (YA12E93102) safety glasses depending on lighting, arc-rated (GS13FRNE) and TenActiv (GS21TXUFNLTC) cut-resistant gloves against edges and cables, a type 2 class E helmet (TA222), as well as arc-rated flame-resistant clothing, a shirt (V340) and pants (V7764), against the electrical hazard.
To build a complete system, connect this positioning lanyard to an ExoFit NEX SEAT-BELT 4D harness for lineworkers (FPH1113653CALP) and to a fall arrest device, either a Nano-Lok self-retracting lifeline (FPLR3101507), or the Cynch-Lok pole fall-limiting device (FPL1204057). Then choose the version suited to your work: rope lanyard with steel snap hook (FPL1234070), rope lanyard with aluminum snap hook (FPL1234071) or nylon rope lanyard (FPL1234080).
