The DBI-SALA tie-off adapter by 3M is a temporary, reusable anchorage point made of lightweight, durable polyester webbing. You wrap it around a host structure (beam, column, member) and close the loop to create a secure connection point for the personal fall arrest system. Its load capacity is 141 kg (310 lb) per ANSI and 190 kg (420 lb) per OSHA. An anchor alone does not stop a fall: together with the connector (self-retracting lifeline or shock-absorbing lanyard) and the harness, it forms a complete fall arrest system.

  • Attachment type: pass-through / sling, adjustable loop.

As a guideline and depending on the applicable provincial regulation, a fall arrest anchor used with an energy absorber (the usual field case) must generally withstand a force of at least 6 kN, and a travel-restraint anchor at least 2 kN. Thresholds vary from province to province; a permanent anchorage point must be validated by an engineer or a competent person.

Job sites and sectors for the tie-off adapter anchor

  • Construction and general industry.
  • Utilities, wind energy, telecommunications.
  • Mining, oil and gas industries.
  • Transportation and temporary work at height.

Installation of the adjustable tie-off adapter anchor

Choose a solid host structure, free of corrosion, cracks and sharp edges. Wrap the webbing around the member, pass the D-ring through the webbing loop, then tighten the adapter around the anchorage point. Connect only one personal fall arrest system per adapter. Increase inspection frequency if the webbing runs near a sharp edge. Any component subjected to fall-arrest forces must be removed from service and destroyed. The employer must have a rescue plan in place before work begins.

Inspection of the fall-arrest tie-off adapter anchor

Before each use, examine the webbing, stitching, D-ring and buckle for cuts, burns, wear, corrosion and legible labels. A build-up of dirt or paint degrades the webbing: remove the product from service. Any adapter that has been subjected to a fall or impact must be taken out of service. A formal inspection by a competent person, other than the user, is required at least once a year. For trained users only, for workplace applications. Repairs are reserved for DBI-SALA or a representative authorized in writing; never repair the product yourself.

Maintenance of the polyester anchor webbing

Clean with water and mild soap, wipe with a cloth and air-dry. Never use a hot-air dryer or heat source, abrasives or harsh chemicals. Store away from moisture and UV rays, and away from corrosion sources, to preserve the webbing strength over time.

Anchorage strength requirements for an anchor point

The minimum strength required of an anchor point depends on the type of system and on the applicable provincial regulation. Because a fall arrest system is almost always used with a shock absorber, this is the value that applies in the vast majority of work situations.

  • Fall arrest system with a shock absorber (the usual case): the anchor must be able to support a static force of at least 6 kN without exceeding the allowable unit stress of the materials it is made of.
  • Travel restraint system (prevents the worker from reaching the edge): the anchor must support at least 2 kN.
  • In Quebec, an anchor point must have a breaking strength of at least 18 kN (Regulation respecting occupational health and safety, CQLR c. S-2.1, r. 4).

A permanent or multi-point anchor must be certified by a professional engineer or installed according to the manufacturer's written instructions. When several fall arrest systems are connected to the same anchor, the required strength multiplies by the number of systems attached. Always have the selection and installation done by a competent person.

FAQ about the adjustable polyester webbing tie-off adapter

Here are the most frequent questions about this DBI-SALA 3M adjustable polyester webbing tie-off adapter anchor.

How strong must my anchor be?

It depends on the system type and the province. With an energy absorber (the normal case), aim for at least 6 kN, and 2 kN in travel restraint; refer to the applicable provincial regulation and a competent person.

Is it permanent or temporary?

Temporary and reusable: install and remove it without tools, and do not mistake it for a permanent anchor.

Which connector should I pair it with?

A self-retracting lifeline or a shock-absorbing lanyard, connected to the worker's harness.

Reusable after a fall?

No: any adapter that has arrested a fall is removed from service and destroyed.

Complementary equipment suggestions
