The ExoFit NEX 4 D-ring SEAT-BELT suspension harness from DBI-SALA (3M) is built for tower workers and anyone who must stay suspended for long periods. It combines fall arrest and work positioning, which makes it a full-body Class AP harness under CSA Z259.10.
3M order number 7012816388, catalogue number 1113653C, medium size.
Available on order.
Its four Tech-Lite aluminum D-rings cover every need of the tower worker: a dorsal D-ring for fall arrest, a sternal D-ring for ascent and two hip D-rings for positioning. The dorsal D-ring carries a sewn impact indicator that visibly deploys after a fall arrest, which makes inspection easier.
The harness features Duo-Lok quick-connect buckles that lock with an audible click, a Revolver vertical torso adjuster, comfort padding and repel-technology webbing that sheds water and dirt. Its padded seat sling spreads the worker's weight during long positioning periods and reduces the risk of suspension trauma.
Capacity: the combined weight of the worker, including clothing and tools, must not exceed 352 lb (160 kg) per CSA Z259.10-06 (420 lb / 191 kg per OSHA, 310 lb / 141 kg per ANSI Z359.1).
This premium harness brings fall arrest, ascent and long-duration work positioning together on a single piece of equipment, with the comfort needed for long days at height.
The dorsal D-ring takes the fall-arrest device, the sternal D-ring is used for ascent and the two hip D-rings take the positioning lanyard. The worker moves from one task to the next without changing harness.
The padded seat sling and comfort padding spread the load during positioning periods, while the Revolver vertical torso adjuster and Duo-Lok buckles ensure fast donning and precise adjustment.
This Class AP harness meets the needs of work at height and in suspension:
A harness alone is not enough: it is the attachment point worn by the worker. For fall arrest, connect a fall-arrest device or an energy-absorbing lanyard to the dorsal D-ring. For work positioning, attach a positioning lanyard to the hip D-rings. Never use the hip D-rings for fall arrest: they are for work positioning only.
The worker is responsible for a routine inspection before each use, checking for any sign of degradation, wear, malfunction or damage. The sewn impact indicator on the dorsal D-ring must be checked: if it is deployed, the harness has taken a fall and must be removed from service immediately.
In addition, this harness should be inspected by a competent person other than the worker wearing it. The harsher the work and environmental conditions, the more frequent the inspection. Sylprotec offers a safety harness inspection service, available under the Service tab at the top of the page. Any equipment subjected to a fall or an impact must be removed from service.
For cleaning, use mild soap and clean lukewarm water. Do not use bleach, fabric softener or other abrasive or chemical products. Air dry away from excessive heat and store the harness in a cool, dry, clean place, away from daylight and chemical vapors.
Here are the most common questions about this 4 D-ring SEAT-BELT ExoFit NEX suspension harness for tower workers.
Class A only provides fall arrest (dorsal D-ring). Class AP adds work positioning through the hip D-rings, letting the tower worker hold position at the work point while keeping fall protection.
The dorsal D-ring is for fall arrest, the sternal D-ring for ascent and the two hip D-rings for work positioning. The hip D-rings must never take a fall-arrest system.
The combined weight of the worker, including clothing and tools, must not exceed 352 lb (160 kg) per CSA Z259.10-06 (420 lb / 191 kg per OSHA, 310 lb / 141 kg per ANSI Z359.1).
It is a padded seat under the pelvis that spreads the worker's weight during long suspension periods. It improves comfort and reduces the risk of suspension trauma.
The four D-rings are Tech-Lite aluminum: lighter than steel while keeping the strength required by fall-protection standards.
To complete the protection of the lineman working in suspension on the ExoFit NEX SEAT-BELT 4D harness, plan for clear (YA12E93101) and tinted (YAZ2600) safety glasses for every light condition, arc (GS13FRNE) or TenActiv (GS13TAFNT) gloves against edges and electrical hazards, a type 2 class E safety helmet (TA222), and an arc-rated flame-resistant coverall available in orange (V1765) or blue (V1766) against electrical arc hazards.
The harness is the personal protective equipment worn by the worker; to build a complete system, combine it with a fall arrest device connected to the dorsal D-ring, such as the Cynch-Lok(TM) pole rope (FPL1204057), and with a work-positioning lanyard attached to the side D-rings, adjustable web (FPL1231016C) or adjustable rope with steel steel (FPL1234070). The harness alone does not arrest a fall without a separate arrest connector.
