Peakworks E4 rope grab with panic lock and lanyard for vertical lifeline

The Peakworks FPACC fall arrest rope grab is a type E4 device that slides along a vertical safety rope and stops a fall thanks to its cam mechanism that firmly grips the rope. It comes with a 2 ft (0.6 m) lanyard, a Shock Pack energy absorber and a standard carabiner with a ¾ in (19 mm) opening. The worker must use it with an approved fall-arrest rope of 5/8 in (16 mm) diameter. It is the ideal solution for safe vertical movement (ladders, roofs, structures).

Its key advantage is the panic-lock device: a spring-loaded cam lever lets the cam grip the rope even if the user instinctively grabs and forces the lever during a fall. This prevents the "tight-grip falls" associated with standard rope grabs. The rope grab is mainly used vertically, with the arrow pointing toward the anchorage (upward).

Peakworks product code: V8103162 or model SA-3206-2. Complies with CSA Z259.11-05 and CSA Z259.2.5-17. According to the manufacturer, the FPACC rope grab is designed to withstand static forces of 5000 lb (22 kN). It suits a worker weighing 99 to 253 lb (45 to 115 kg), including clothing, tools and equipment.

The energy absorber is designed to reduce the impact force of a fall below 900 lb (4 kN). During a fall, it deploys over a distance of 6 ft (1.8 m) to reduce the force experienced by the worker at arrest. Once the absorber has deployed, the lanyard and harness must be replaced: it is the sign that the equipment did its job and protected a life.

About the anchorage point

The anchorage point should preferably be located above the level of the harness dorsal D-ring and positioned vertically relative to the user. The user must assess the risks of a fall: is there enough clear distance free of obstacles below the worker? Are emergency measures in place to recover the worker quickly? Can the anchorage point withstand a force of 5000 lb? For more information, consult the manufacturer's manual.

Safety rope grab inspection

The worker is responsible for performing a routine inspection before each use. The worker must check that the cam and panic-lock lever work properly, note any sign of degradation, wear or breakage, and replace the rope grab at the first sign of failure. This device should also be inspected periodically by a qualified person other than the worker (from every 90 days to yearly depending on the manufacturer and conditions). The recommended lifetime is 5 years. Any equipment that has withstood a fall or an impact must be taken out of service. Sylprotec offers a fall protection inspection service; to learn more, see the Services tab.

Fall arrest rope grab maintenance

For cleaning, use a mild soap and lukewarm water (37 °C). Do not use bleach or abrasive or chemical products. Keep the cam mechanism clean and free of debris. Air dry, without excessive heat, in a clean environment. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and to any source of contamination.
