The Protecta 3M PRO Pack shock absorbing lanyard is a single-leg lanyard built for environments exposing the equipment to heat, sparks or flames, such as welding or cutting. Its fire-resistant Kevlar web withstands temperatures up to 700°F (371°C), while the controlled tear-away energy absorber reduces the arresting forces transmitted to the worker in the event of a fall.

It connects by means of two zinc-plated double-locking snap hooks, one at each end, allowing quick and secure connection to the harness and to the approved anchorage point.

Total worker weight capacity, including clothing, tools and equipment, is 130 to 310 lb (59 to 140.6 kg). This product is certified to CSA Z259.11.

Understanding the fall clearance window

Before using this energy-absorbing lanyard, calculate the fall clearance, that is, the free space required below the anchorage point to arrest a fall before the worker strikes the ground or an obstacle. This clearance window adds up from several elements: the length of the lanyard, the deployment of the energy absorber, the height of the worker, the dorsal D-ring slide and a safety margin. A miscalculation is one of the most common causes of serious injuries at height, even with compliant equipment.

For the 4 ft model: about 15.5 ft (4.7 m) of clearance. For the 6 ft model (the worst case): the lanyard (6 ft) plus the absorber deployment (4 ft) plus the worker height (6 ft) plus a safety margin (1.5 ft) give a total clearance of about 17.5 ft (5.3 m) below an overhead anchorage. In low-clearance situations, choose a self-retracting lifeline instead.

Required fall clearance lanyard

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about the PRO Pack Kevlar lanyard

Why choose a Kevlar fiber lanyard over a standard lanyard?

Kevlar fiber withstands intense heat, sparks and flames up to 700°F (371°C), making it suitable for welding, torch cutting or work near heat sources, unlike standard polyester webbing which could melt or weaken.

What is the capacity of this lanyard?

This lanyard is designed for a worker whose total weight, including tools, is between 130 and 310 lb (59 to 140.6 kg).

What happens if the lanyard sustains a fall?

The lanyard must be removed from service immediately once it has sustained an impact force, in accordance with the CSA Z259.11 standard.

What fall clearance is required?

About 15.5 ft (4.7 m) for the 4 ft model, and about 17.5 ft (5.3 m) for the 6 ft model, below an overhead anchorage. In low-clearance situations, choose a self-retracting lifeline instead.

Complementary suggestions for the lanyard:

Beyond fall arrest, equip the worker for hot work: the welder's harness (FPH1191392C) and Kevlar mitts (G610), their eyes with safety eyewear (YA3297), and their hearing with earplugs (OA1101).

To complete your fall protection system, combine your lanyard with reliable anchors: a removable device (FPA831), a permanent anchor (FPA1540), or a semi-automatic carabiner (FPAM88). Every component of the harness-lanyard-anchor assembly can save lives at height, especially in high-heat environments.
