The UN3257 placard identifies a load of elevated temperature liquid, at or above 100°C and below its flash point, class 9, on heated tank trucks and vehicles carrying process liquids, molten metals or molten salts. It shows the number 3257 in black in its white box, the black vertical stripes and the class number 9, on a white 10-3/4 X 10-3/4 in diamond that fits most placard holders. Made in Canada, this less common number is specially ordered and sold in packs of 100 rigid plastic placards.

UN number 3257 corresponds to the shipping name ELEVATED TEMPERATURE LIQUID, N.O.S., at or above 100°C and below its flash point, including molten metals and molten salts, class 9, packing group III. It is found in the transport of hot bitumen, but also of process liquids, molten metals and molten salts; the composition is on the safety data sheet. Transport Canada's 2024 Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) places it under guide 171: the immediate hazard is thermal burns and rupture of a heated container, and the right response depends greatly on the exact material.
In case of a spill during transport or in your storage area, guide 171 calls for dialing 911, then the emergency number on the shipping document, and isolating at least 50 m around a liquid spill, increasing the protected area downwind as needed. Do not touch or walk through the product, and stop the leak only if you can do it without risk. For a small spill, the guide calls for picking up the liquid with sand or another non-combustible absorbent material and transferring it into a container; for a large spill, for diking far ahead of the liquid and keeping the flow out of waterways, sewers, basements and confined areas. A hot liquid, molten metal or molten salt nevertheless calls for instructions specific to the material: let trained personnel choose the method based on the safety data sheet.
For a material carried hot, use only earth, sand or another non-combustible material, as the guide calls for, and keep traffic pylons (EPTCONE28B), barricade tape (ECT3YB1) and an extendable barrier (EPT195) in the vehicle to keep people away from the hot liquid.
According to guide 171, some of these materials may burn, but none ignites readily; a heated container can still rupture. For a small fire, the guide names dry chemical and CO₂: an ABC dry powder (EXABC10) extinguisher or a CO₂ (EXCO10) unit is suitable. Place it in the vehicle cab and at an accessible spot near the storage area, outside the hazard zone. For molten metal or salt, the right agent depends on the material: follow the safety data sheet. A large fire is a job for firefighters. If a tank, rail tank car or highway tank is involved in a fire, the guide calls for isolating 800 m in all directions and considering an initial evacuation over the same distance.
These guidelines from the 2024 ERG help you prepare your transport and storage procedures. For the exact product and the real situation, the current safety data sheet and the ERG prevail; emergency measures are for trained and equipped personnel, with a positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), as the guide specifies.
The UN3257 placard is intended for heated tank carriers, paving contractors and industries shipping liquids, molten metals or molten salts at high temperature. Sold in packs of 100 in reusable rigid plastic, it fits in a placard holder and serves from one trip to the next.
Complete your display with the aluminum flip chart placard with fourteen (ECLAP14) legends, including class 9, for trucks whose cargo changes; the class 9 miscellaneous dangerous goods placard (ECLA9); and the yellow and black adhesive tape (ECT751JN108) to mark off the storage area.

Keep the placard clean so the number stays legible, and replace it if it is damaged, faded or illegible. Rigid plastic is weatherproof and can be reused from one trip to the next.
This number is not one of the common pre-printed placards: it is specially ordered and offered in packs of 100 in rigid plastic.
It may fall under UN3257 if it travels at or above 100°C, below its flash point. If it travels at or above its flash point, entry UN3256 applies instead; the shipping document shows the exact number.
Guide 171 of the 2024 ERG calls for isolating at least 50 m around a liquid spill and increasing the protected area downwind as needed. If a tank is on fire, isolate 800 m in all directions.
For a small fire, an ABC or BC dry chemical extinguisher, or a CO₂ extinguisher. A large fire is a job for firefighters: move away and dial 911.
Guide 171 of the 2024 Emergency Response Guidebook. The product's safety data sheet gives the instructions specific to the material.
For the driver or handler who deals with the hot liquid at loading, delivery or in the warehouse, plan for Centurion splash goggles (YG454), a 6000 series full face respirator (R6800) for routine handling, with cartridges selected according to the SDS and the risk assessment, 18 in nitrile gloves (GL37185), waterproof PVC steel toe boots (VC18821C) and a flame-resistant high-visibility vest (VV510FR) to stay visible on the road and at the loading station.
To mark off a hot liquid spill and respond to a starting fire, keep a 10 lb ABC dry chemical (EXABC10) extinguisher or a 10 lb dioxide (EXCO10) unit close at hand, 28 in traffic cones (EPTCONE28B), 1000 ft yellow barricade perimeter (ECT3YB1) and an 11-1/2 ft extendable barricade (EPT195) to keep people at a distance. For a driver working in isolation: the type 1 personal (TR01) first aid kit suits an isolated worker with no access to another kit, a vehicle with 1 to 5 workers, or a vehicle with more than 5 workers less than 30 minutes from medical services; for a vehicle with more than 5 workers more than 30 minutes from medical services, provide the type 2 basic (TR02M) first aid kit. Complete the truck's equipment with a portable road safety kit (TR16) and the set of three removable reflectors (EPTR) to signal a stopped vehicle.
