This 300-denier oxford polyester safety wear has been lined with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to provide water-resistance. The manufacturer grants this product a waterproof rating of 10,000 mm, i.e. it can withstand the pressure of a 10 m water column. A waterproof rating is granted when a material has been tested under the pressure of a cylinder filled with water, in this case, 10 m high of water. This height defines the limit at which the material stops being resistant and water starts passing through.

All seams have been taped and heat-sealed. These pants are ideal for everyday work, even in extreme conditions as it is perfectly watertight. It is recommended for any worker surrounded by motorized vehicles: construction workers, white collars, drivers, transport workers, etc.

Reflective stripes and visibility:
These water-resistant pants have been provided with silver retroreflective stripes. Each one of them has a width of 50 mm (2 in.), and is surrounded by thin hi-viz yellow stripes. These pants have two horizontal stripes around the ankles.

Fluorescent yellow (or that safety greenish yellow) is quite visible during daylight and in poor natural light conditions, e.g. at dawn or dusk. In most cases, this yellow ensures a high contrast with most backgrounds. Since bright yellow is lighter than orange, it can be perceived more easily at night, yet reflective stripes will always be best in the dark.

Fluorescent orange is quite visible during daylight and in bright artificial lighting conditions. In most cases, it ensures a high contrast with most backgrounds. However, bright orange is less visible at night and in poor lighting conditions, be it natural or artificial, e.g. at dawn or dusk.

Silver retroreflective stripes are the most visible there is in poor lighting conditions, be it natural or artificial, since they reflect the light toward the light source (flashlight, automotive headlamp, etc.). Therefore, they offer greater protection at dawn, dusk, and night. Reflective bands won’t, however, increase visibility during daylight.

Design:
The wide style of these pants allows one to easily wear warm clothes underneath while still allowing a good airflow. They feature no fly opening or pockets. They however feature boot access with adjustable hook and loop ankles to allow a tight fit with work boots or winter wear. These pants are not flame-resistant.

These PVC lined oxford polyester pants are said to be manufactured with a 300-deniers yarn; in layman’s terms, it is a medium-weight protective wear which is lightweight enough to offer comfort but is heavyweight enough to offer an effective protection. By definition, 300 deniers refer to the weight in grams of 9,000 m of the yarn used to make these pants, that is, 300 deniers equal 300 g. The manufacturer, Viking®, is unable to provide the PVC liner’s thickness.

Regarding the oxford term, it refers to the type of woven fabric. The oxford cloth is widely used in the industry, namely to manufacture dress shirts, coats, bags, etc. The oxford weaving consists in interlacing a warp thread (horizontal line) and a weft thread (vertical line) to create the oxford’s infamous basket weave structure.

Water-resistance:
The airtightness of these pants comes from its double sewn, taped and heat-sealed seams. PVC-lined waterproof safety wear is usually worn by workers who may be exposed to remote or moderate risks of chemical splashes. PVC is a thermoplastic polymer which offers resistance to chemicals, oils, greases, acids, alkalies, solvents, oxidants, and ozone. PVC is also resistant to wear and tear, and stretching.

PVC-coated clothes are recommended for workers that work in environments where the temperature varies between -5 °C and 18 °C accompanied by showers and strong winds. This rainwear keeps workers dry during heavy rains because PVC is absolutely non-porous; it is, however, absolutely not breathable which may cause a sauna effect through perspiration. One must thus choose wisely what to wear underneath according to the efforts required.

Maintenance:
These pants should always be machine-washed in a delicate setting with cold or lukewarm water, and a gentle soap. Never use bleaching agents or fabric softeners on these pants. It should also be air-dried in a sheltered spot out of direct sunlight. Never tumble dry, iron or dry clean this rainwear. The manufacturer ensures that these pants have a service life of twenty-five wash.
