Weather Stopper Cover – Weather-Resistant Protection (Surface Mount)

The Weather Stopper is a specialized version of the Stopper II, specifically engineered to protect manual fire alarm stations from the elements. This model is ideal for surface-mount installations where the station is exposed to rain, snow, dust, or humidity. It does not feature a local alarm, focusing instead on physical durability and environmental sealing.

This cover is UL listed hence the equipment and its installation meets Canadian standards. This piece of equipment is ideal for fire safety in public locations such as schools, hospitals, mills, etc.

STI™ product code: STI-3150/FRE

Weather Stopper® covers protect manual pull stations from impacts and help prevent false fire alarms without restricting legitimate alarms. The cover can easily be lifted and is connected to the frame by a metal cable. It was designed for indoors use as outdoor use. Such an accessory requires a double action to trigger a fire alarm compared to a simple pull station which requires one sole move.

All labelling on the cover are in French, however the instructions provided in the package are only available in English (PDF version available for download).

Polycarbonate properties:

Polycarbonate is a clear low flammability material highly resistant to impacts which features impressive mechanical and thermal properties, hence its use in so many fields. It is commonly used to manufacture safety eyewear, protective faceshield, law enforcement shield, optical lenses, thermal imaging and so many other vandal-proof items. The polycarbonate used for the fabrication of Weather Stopper® covers is UV-stabilized against degradation caused by the sun.

Key Benefits: Sealing and Durability

This model is essential for ensuring your fire alarm system remains operational in harsh conditions:

  • Weather Protection: Equipped with weather-resistant gaskets that prevent water (rain, water jets), snow, and dust from entering and corroding the manual station.

  • Extreme Temperature Resistance: Made of high-quality polycarbonate capable of withstanding harsh winters and intense heat without cracking or yellowing.

  • Surface Spacer Included: Designed for surface-mount installations, it includes a deep back-box/spacer that allows for a perfect seal of the protruding station against the wall.

  • Linguistic Compliance: Features clear instructions in French (compliant with Quebec regulations): “En cas de feu, soulever le couvercle et tirer la station.”

  • Accidental Activation Prevention: Like other models in the range, it prevents accidental triggers by adding a physical barrier.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Can the cover freeze shut?

The Weather Stopper design is intended to shed moisture. However, in extreme ice storm conditions, it is recommended to visually inspect the equipment during security rounds.

Does it protect against vandalism?

Yes. Although designed for weather resistance, it is made of the same ultra-tough polycarbonate as the anti-vandalism models, offering effective protection against impacts.

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Expert Advice

  • Installation: To ensure a perfect seal, make sure the wall surface is flat. If the wall is irregular (brick, stucco), using a sealant around the frame may be necessary.

  • Maintenance: Inspect the gaskets once a year to ensure they are not dried out or cracked.

  • Transparency: A simple cleaning with water and mild soap is sufficient. Never use abrasive products that could scratch the cover and hinder the visibility of the station.

Maintenance and life service:

Some basic practices should be adopted to maintain manual pull station covers. It is thus recommended to wash the cover with lukewarm water and a gentle soap. The manufacturer strongly advises not to use steel pads since they scratch any surface they touch which will temper with the legibility of the label. It also is not recommended to use harsh soaps on the cover since polycarbonate doesn’t mix well at all with a wide array of acids and other chemical compounds. Indeed, these products will make your cover kind of melt. If the cover surface isn’t soft to the touch and bubbles appear, the cover has been corrupted and must be replaced.

As for its life service, the manufacturer asserts that his Weather Stopper® covers are durable; some have been in service for almost 20 years.
