Benefits of the Lad-Saf vertical safety system

  • Complete system sold as a single SKU: both brackets (top and bottom), the pre-swaged cable and the cable guides are included.
  • Redesigned system: fewer than 13 components in some configurations, up to 72 percent fewer parts than the previous generation.
  • Factory pre-swaged cable termination, maintenance-free and requiring no special field tooling.
  • Integrated fall arrest anchor point on the top bracket, rated at 3,600 lb (1,633 kg).
  • Lighter and faster to install, ideal for roof access by ladder and hatch.
  • Compliant with ANSI Z359.16 when used with a detachable Lad-Saf X2 or X3 sleeve.

Features and safety of the stainless Lad-Saf cable

The Lad-Saf system is a flexible-cable vertical safety system for fixed ladders. The top and bottom brackets are stainless steel and the pre-swaged cable is stainless steel with a 1 x 7 strand, 3/8 in (9.5 mm) in diameter. Its minimum breaking strength is 18,000 lb (80.1 kN), compliant with the RR-W-410 standard.

The system supports 2 users at the same time and offers a load capacity of 620 lb (281 kg) per user. The top bracket integrates a fall arrest anchor point rated at 3,600 lb (1,633 kg). The system is compliant with ANSI Z359.16 only when used with a compliant safety harness and a detachable Lad-Saf X2 or X3 cable sleeve: it is a complete system.

Ladder mounting compatibility

The brackets mount on various fixed-ladder styles. The compatible ranges, to be confirmed on the technical data sheet of the exact model, are as follows:

  • Rung spacing: 9 to 12.25 in (200 to 310 mm).
  • Round rung: 0.75 to 1.6 in (19 to 40 mm) in diameter.
  • Square rung: 0.75 to 1.6 in (19 to 40 mm).
  • Diamond rung: 0.75 to 1.6 in (19 to 40 mm) in height.
  • Angle iron: 0.75 to 1.6 in (19 to 40 mm) in leg height.
  • Rectangular rung: 0.75 to 1.6 in (19 to 40 mm) in height and 0.75 to 1.9 in (19 to 48 mm) in width.

Job sites and industries

  • Roof access by fixed ladder and hatch.
  • Silos, tanks, towers and poles.
  • Permanent industrial fixed ladders.
  • Telecommunications and wind energy.
  • Oil and gas industry, utilities.

Installing the Lad-Saf vertical system on a fixed ladder

Installation is permanent and must be carried out by a competent person. The top bracket and bottom bracket are fastened at the ends of the ladder, then the pre-swaged cable is tensioned over the full height. Cable guides are spaced along the run, generally every 20 to 40 ft.

The number of included guides varies with cable length: no guide for the 20 ft version, one guide from 30 to 50 ft, two guides from 60 to 80 ft and three guides from 90 to 100 ft. Additional guides and hollow-rung supports may be required depending on the structure: confirm with a 3M representative.

Inspecting the Lad-Saf vertical fall protection system

Before each use, inspect the brackets, the cable (fraying, corrosion, tension), the guides, the integrated anchor point and the identification labels. Any system that has arrested a fall must be removed from service and undergo a formal inspection.

This formal inspection must be performed by a competent person other than the user, at least once a year. Repair is reserved for 3M DBI-SALA or an authorized representative in writing. Refer to the applicable provincial regulation and a competent person to establish the exact inspection frequency.

Maintenance of the stainless Lad-Saf cable and brackets

Clean the system with warm water and a mild soap, then let it air dry, away from direct heat sources. Protect the components against corrosion and store the equipment in a dry place, away from moisture, which is especially important for stainless steel.

FAQ: frequently asked questions about the Lad-Saf system

Does this system support 2 or 4 users?

This version is designed for 2 simultaneous users. Other Lad-Saf system heads exist in a 4-user configuration: refer to the technical data sheet of the desired model.

Should I choose galvanized or stainless steel?

This system is stainless steel, suited to most industrial environments. For highly corrosive environments (coastal, chemical), a stainless steel version is offered separately.

Which cable sleeve is required?

The system only arrests a fall when used with a detachable Lad-Saf X2 or X3 sleeve, connected to the sternal ring of a compliant safety harness. The sleeve is ordered separately.

How many cable guides are included?

The number of guides depends on the length: none for 20 ft, one from 30 to 50 ft, two from 60 to 80 ft and three from 90 to 100 ft. Additional guides may be required depending on the structure.

Which regulation does this system meet?

The system is compliant with ANSI Z359.16 with an X2 or X3 sleeve. The OSHA regulatory context targets fixed ladders over 24 ft. Always refer to the applicable provincial regulation and a competent person to validate your installation.

Complementary suggestions for fall protection equipment

To complete your personal protective equipment for vertical access on a fixed ladder, add a harness class L with a sternal D-ring (FPH140200XCAL) that keeps the climber facing the ladder, cut-resistant gloves (GS13KFNT), safety glasses (YA3301), a protective helmet (TA14LR) held by its strap (TA14CS), a high-visibility garment (V6671) and corded earplugs (OA111).

This system is part of a complete vertical fall arrest chain. Connect the worker to the cable with a Lad-Saf X2 (FPACC6160030) or X3 (FPACC6160054) sleeve, essential to the system operation. Provide a RollGliss R550 rescue device (FPLR550) for controlled descent, and mark off the area at the base of the structure with a DANGER barricade tape (ECT3RE9).
