One of the main advantages of this type of equipment is that it replaces regular lanyards by providing a reduced stopping distance in case of a fall. The webbing is made of Kevlar and the termination with the carabiner is protected by a piece of UHMWPE.

The SLR has a standard self-locking carabiner with a 7/8" (22.22mm) opening that unlocks with a double action. It does not have a 3/4" (19mm) opening semi-automatic (rotating ring) carabiner (FPAM88 or FPAM91).

The maximum load limit of this personal fall limiter with vertical anchorage is 310 lbs (136 kg), including the worker's clothing, tools and equipment.

In the event of a fall, the fall distance will depend on the anchor arrangement. The maximum stopping distance is 39-3/8" (1.0 m) and the braking mechanism combined will limit the forces exerted on the falling worker to 4.12 kN (928 lbf) for a worker weighing up to 310 lbs.

The housing is made of impact resistant thermoplastic and corrosion resistant parts. It weighs 3.65 lb (1.35 kg). The lightweight devices can be mounted on the worker's harness for greater freedom and range of motion. The enclosure is approved for use in the vertical application only. In addition, it has an integrated rotating swivel that prevents the strap from twisting.

The self-retracting lanyard has a certification label on the housing, while a bilingual instructional label is affixed to the housing to enhance understanding of the conditions of use. This model is not designed to protect workers from sharp edges, also known as Leading Edge (LE) applications, but proper protection is possible by following the operating conditions outlined in the user manual.

About the anchor point and free fall distance:
The anchor point should preferably be located above the level of the harness back loop and should be positioned vertically to the user. The worker should remain below the anchor point so as to remain within a perimeter of no more than a 30 degree angle. In addition, if there are unprotected cutting edges, they should be secured.

It is important that the user is aware of the risks of a possible fall. Among other things, is there a sufficient distance free of obstacles below the worker? Are there emergency measures in place to quickly recover the worker? Can the anchor point withstand a force of 5000 lbs? For more information, consult the manufacturer's manual.

Inspection:

The worker is responsible for performing a routine inspection before each use. During this routine inspection, the worker should observe any signs of deterioration, wear, malfunction or breakage. You must replace your equipment at the first sign of failure.

In addition, this retractable should be inspected by a qualified person other than the worker. The required frequency of these inspections varies by manufacturers. Some prescribe every 90 days, other every 180 days, or even annually.

Keep in mind that the more difficult the work and environmental conditions, the more often your equipment will need to be inspected. The recommended life span of a lanyard is 5 years. Some manufacturers are silent on the subject, but in practice, a retractable used regularly and neglected in terms of storage or maintenance will not have a long life. On average, their lifespan will not exceed 5 years.
