The DBI-SALA® 3M 8301074 3-way system is a complete kit for entry and rescue operations in confined spaces. It combines a 7 ft (2.13 m) aluminum tripod, a 60 ft (18.288 m) personnel winch and a 50 ft (15.24 m) 3-function self-retracting lifeline (SRL) with galvanized steel cable. Load capacity reaches 22 kN (5,000 lb). Gross weight of the kit: 128 lb (~58.1 kg). Packaging dimensions: 21 in × 34 in × 78 in. UPC: 00648250257616.
3M order code: 7100328025, model: 8301074.
This product complies with CSA Z1220-17 confined space equipment standard, as well as CSA Z259.2.2 (type 3 self-retracting lifelines), ANSI Z359 and OSHA 1910.146.
Confined space entry involves major risks: deep fall, tainted atmosphere, inability to climb back up unaided in an emergency. The 3-way system addresses these three concerns. Function 1 (winch) allows controlled descent and ascent of the worker. Function 2 (SRL) ensures immediate fall arrest in case of winch failure or free fall. Function 3 (emergency recovery) allows a surface rescuer to mechanically retrieve an unconscious or injured worker without entering the confined space themselves, which is the absolute rule in rescue operations per current standards.
Air quality warning for confined spaces:
Before any descent into a pit, tank, sewer or silo, air quality must be validated. Canadian statistics show that more than 60% of confined space deaths are caused by a hazardous atmosphere (lack of O₂, presence of H₂S, CO or combustible gases), often invisible and odorless. No tripod, even compliant, protects against tainted air. A MSA Altair 4X multi-gas detector (DETEC4G) must be used to measure O₂ (19.5 to 23%), LEL (below 10%), CO (below 25 ppm) and H₂S (below 10 ppm) before entry, then continuously during operations. Quebec OSH Regulation (art. 297 to 312) and CSA Z1006 require ventilation, surface attendant and written emergency plan before any intervention.
Technical specifications:
Tripod height: 7 ft (2.13 m), telescopic locking legs. Personnel winch: 60 ft (18.288 m). 3-way SRL: 50 ft (15.24 m). Capacity: 22 kN (5,000 lb). SRL cable material: galvanized steel. Structure material: aluminum. Operating temperature range complies with DBI-SALA requirements. Lead time: made to order (~15 calendar days).
Aluminum and galvanized steel material:
The aluminum tripod structure combines two essential field assets: lightness (the complete system weighs only 58 kg despite its 5,000 lb capacity) and mechanical strength. A single worker can carry and install the tripod between two intervention points without help, which speeds up multi-point inspection or maintenance operations. The galvanized steel SRL cable offers excellent tensile strength and good corrosion resistance in ordinary humid environments (municipal sumps, treatment plants). For severe corrosive or chemically aggressive environments, choose the stainless cable version 8301075.
Routine inspection before each use by the operator (visual check of cable, stitching, retraction mechanism, legs). Qualified inspection by a competent person every 90 or 180 days depending on frequency of use. Recommended service life: 5 years. Immediate out-of-service after fall, impact or SRL activation. Sylprotec offers an annual inspection service by qualified technician and a preventive maintenance program.
Maintenance: clean with lukewarm water (37 °C) and mild soap. Air-dry away from direct sunlight and heat. Lubricate the mechanism only with products recommended by 3M. Store in the dedicated transport bag (see FPLR9503094) away from moisture.
A winch alone allows descent and ascent, but offers no protection against cable break or free fall. The 3-way system adds an independent SRL that arrests the fall, and a mechanical recovery function to extract an unconscious worker. This redundancy is required by CSA Z1220-17.
The 7 ft suits the majority of pits, manholes and municipal sumps. For wider openings or increased working heights, a 9 ft tripod may be required. Consult our advisors for a recommendation adapted to your application.
The 8301074 uses a galvanized steel SRL cable, suitable for standard humid environments. The 8301075 uses a stainless steel cable, recommended for aggressive chemical, marine or food-grade environments.
To equip the worker called to descend into the confined space, plan an ExoFit X300 Class A harness (FPH1403198C) with dorsal and side D-rings or the vest version ExoFit X300 (FPH11401C) for increased comfort during long interventions. Add safety glasses (YASF401BG) and ear earplugs (OA1250) against ambient noise from pumps or fans.
Under “Accessories” at the bottom of the page. For handling and hand protection against sharp cable edges, use Dyneema PU level A4 cut-resistant gloves (GS13SXGPU). For transport and protection of the tripod between job sites, the custom-fit Advanced bag (FPLR9503094) is designed for this 7 ft model. For corrosive or food-grade environments, consider the stainless version (FPLR8301075) of the same aluminum tripod.
