Equipping several processes does not always require predetermined optics: the E version leaves filter choice open and provides a lightweight base. The 3M Speedglas G5-03 E 09-0100-00 helmet is the entry version of the G5-03 platform, sold without a welding filter. It comes with its headgear and front panel: simply install a filter approved for the G5-03 E, such as the natural colour G5NC that 3M offers in other configurations, along with its protection plates. This format suits shops that already own filters in good condition or that want to choose the filter themselves for each workstation. Once equipped, the helmet is intended for most MMA processes, MIG/MAG and TIG, as well as grinding.

Why choose the G5-03 E without filter

The E version lets the buyer choose optical behaviour while retaining a shell intended for everyday work. The helmet and headgear form the base; filter selection is a separate decision based on processes, team preferences and the functions required. The G5-03 brochure presents compatible G5NC, G5TW and G5VC options, as well as approved passive solutions.

3M describes the G5-03 E as lightweight and well balanced, with smooth sides and no protruding parts. This shape supports movement around an assembly without adding respiratory equipment that is not included with this reference. The shell provides coverage for welding spatter, while headgear adjustment helps keep the viewing area aligned with the eyes.

For a workshop already using compatible filters, this presentation renews the helmet while retaining the selected optics. For a new setup, it allows the filter and genuinely needed accessories to be chosen separately.

Recommended Applications

3M presents the G5-03 E for general manufacturing and metalworking environments. In a parts welding shop, it equips a new employee from the stock of filters already on hand. In a training centre, it allows identical helmets to be purchased and filters to be distributed by booth. In plant maintenance, it lets the welder alternate welding and finish grinding during the same job, once the appropriate filter is installed.

Features and benefits

  • G5-03 E helmet supplied with headgear and front panel, ready to receive a filter.
  • Sold without a welding filter: the filter approved for the G5-03 E is selected separately.
  • Polyphthalamide (PPA) shell, black in colour.
  • Intended for most MMA processes, MIG/MAG, TIG and grinding once equipped.
  • Lightweight helmet: 0.741 lb / 0.336 kg without filter.

Use limitations

Use the welding helmet only between -5 and +55 °C. Do not use it where contact with an open flame is possible. Without a welding filter, this helmet is not ready for welding and does not protect against arc radiation. Install a filter approved for the G5-03 E and its plates before any use. 3M excludes laser welding and heavy overhead work that exposes the wearer to molten metal. The helmet is not respiratory protection.

Filter compatibility and assembly

Choose a filter approved for the G5-03 E helmet; 3M notably pairs the G5-03 E with the G5NC filter in its 09-0100-20-KIT. Install the filter with its protection plates, adjust the headgear, then check that the helmet tilts correctly and that the filter is held securely in its housing.

Specifications and approvals

G5-03 E platform, model 09-0100-00, polyphthalamide (PPA) shell, black colour, headgear and front panel included, no side windows. Helmet weight: 0.741 lb / 0.336 kg. The G5-03 E assembled with an approved filter meets ANSI Z87.1 and CSA Z94.3; the shell alone without a filter is not approved equipment ready for welding.

From filter selection to fitting the E helmet

First adjust the headgear for stability, then check clearance between the face, safety glasses and installed filter. Test freedom of movement in the working posture, including when looking down towards a workpiece.

Welding, cutting and grinding modes depend on the selected filter: the shell alone has no arc sensors or shade control. Before striking an arc, check plate installation and filter operation according to its instructions. The task light and extended coverage shown by 3M are optional accessories to select when the workstation requires them; their appearance in a brochure does not make them included with the 09-0100-00.

Care and service life

Before each use, check that the helmet, headgear and installed filter are undamaged and correctly assembled; replace a damaged part before resuming work. Do not use solvents on the shell, do not immerse it and do not spray liquid directly on it: a slightly damp cloth is enough. Store the helmet away from spatter and heat between shifts.

FAQ: the G5-03 E 09-0100-00 helmet

Does the G5-03 E 09-0100-00 helmet include a filter?

No. It is sold without a welding filter. The headgear and front panel are included.

Which filter can I install in this helmet?

A filter approved for the G5-03 E. 3M notably pairs it with the G5NC filter in the 09-0100-20-KIT.

Can this helmet be used for grinding?

Yes, 3M recommends the G5-03 E for welding and grinding, once fitted with an appropriate filter.

Which approvals apply to this helmet?

Assembled with an approved filter, the G5-03 E meets ANSI Z87.1 and CSA Z94.3.

Can the E shell already change shades?

No. Shades, sensors and operating modes are provided by the installed filter. Reference 09-0100-00 leaves that filter to be selected separately; the helmet must be assembled and checked with an approved model before welding.

Complementary suggestions

For an apprentice welder receiving this helmet in a fabrication shop, plan Privo glasses (YA12261) with clear polycarbonate lenses to keep under the helmet and TenActiv cut-resistant gloves (GSTAFGFNT) with nitrile foam coating for handling sheet metal. Classic earplugs (OA101) protect hearing during grinding, the certified respirator (R9210) is added according to the dust assessment, and yellow and black anti-slip tape (ECT749) marks the walkway around the booth.

The G5-03 E welding filter is selected by its exact 3M model, such as the G5NC 46-0000-20, with its matching protection plates. No G5-03 E spare part is offered online yet: specify the helmet model, 09-0100-00, when making a request. To compare model 09-0100-00 with distinct configurations, also review variant (RG5-03E), solution (R45-009935), model (R45-0099-33), helmet (R10-0100-30VC), assembly (R10-0300-52). Compare their contents with model 09-0100-00; the parts are not presumed interchangeable.
