A fine TIG joint requires following the torch without losing sight of the workpiece edges. Curved glass addresses that need for precision. The 3M Speedglas G5-02 08-0100-50iC welding helmet arrives complete: curved G5-02 auto-darkening filter, headgear, cleaning cloth and bag. The filter follows the curve of the helmet and opens a 5.9 X 3 in / 150 X 76 mm view, widening the outlook on the joint and the sides of the workpiece. In the light state, shade 2.5 helps position the electrode or torch before striking the arc; the filter then switches to the dark shade selected between 8 and 12. Its 4 sensors and 6 sensitivity levels are intended for arc welding, MIG/MAG, TIG above 1 A and plasma.
Precision welding requires a view of both the weld pool and the edges of the joint. The G5-02 curved glass expands peripheral vision without requiring the width of a large flat-filter helmet. Its shape and close-fitting shell profile also help reduce distracting internal reflections. Natural Colour Technology makes colours and contrasts easier to distinguish before arc strike and while following the bead.
3M also positioned the centre of gravity closer to the head for better weight distribution. This is useful when the welder maintains a steady position over a small workpiece. Exhaled-air channels help limit heat and humidity building up inside the helmet. This is passive comfort ventilation; this configuration does not contain an Adflo respirator.
The filter, headgear and storage accessories are supplied together. This gives the buyer a complete optical setup, particularly relevant to careful TIG work, without having to select a compatible curved filter separately.
3M intends this helmet for welders in transportation, construction, general manufacturing, military maintenance and mining. In a fabrication shop, it follows arc and MIG/MAG stations where tacks and beads follow one another without lifting the helmet. On a job site or in a fleet garage, its curved view helps follow a weld that wraps around a tube or a frame rail. TIG welders working above 1 A and plasma cutting operators use the same eye and face protection.
Use the welding helmet only between -5 and +55 °C. Do not use it where contact with an open flame is possible. The G5-02 is not suitable for grinding or processes requiring a shade higher than 12. This helmet is not suitable for laser welding. 3M also excludes heavy overhead welding work that exposes the wearer to molten metal. It protects the eyes and face; it is not respiratory protection against welding fumes, which must be selected separately according to the workstation assessment.
Set the dark shade according to the table in the 3M instructions for the G5-02 filter, for the process and current actually used.

The helmet, filter and accessories ship together in a case of one unit.
Adjust the headgear so the helmet stays stable in both the lowered and raised positions, then choose sensitivity among the 6 levels according to the process: the setting must trigger darkening at arc strike without reacting to ambient lighting. Before welding, check that the 4 sensors are clear and that the filter switches from shade 2.5 to the selected dark shade.
A filter that does not darken, flickers or has a scratched view must be removed from service until it is replaced.
G5-02 platform, curved 08-0000-50iC filter, light shade 2.5, dark shades 8 to 12, 5.9 X 3 in / 150 X 76 mm viewing area, 4 sensors and 6 sensitivity levels. Polyphthalamide (PPA) shell, black colour. Weight of the helmet with filter and headgear: 1.179 lb / 0.535 kg. The G5-02 assembled according to the instructions meets ANSI Z87.1. Sold as one unit.
First set headgear height and tension, then the distance between the face and filter. A stable fit avoids having to support the helmet with the neck when looking down at a joint. Set shade, sensitivity and the return-to-light delay for the process, following the filter instructions. Shade and sensitivity controls are positioned near the lower corners of the viewing area for easier access.
Before low-current TIG work, check switching in the actual welding position and keep the sensors clear. Inspect the curved protection plates: spatter-covered surfaces can undermine the benefit of the wide view. Replace a damaged plate with the correct G5-02 part rather than adapting a flat plate.
Before each use, check that the helmet is complete, undamaged and correctly assembled, then replace any cracked or deformed part without delay. Wipe the shell without solvents, without immersing it and without spraying liquid directly on it; the supplied cloth handles routine cleaning. Store the helmet in its bag between shifts to protect the curved filter from spatter and scratches.
Yes. The curved G5-02 08-0000-50iC auto-darkening filter is included, along with the headgear, a cleaning cloth and a bag.
The light-state shade is 2.5; dark shade adjustment runs from 8 to 12. Choose the setting from the table in the 3M filter instructions.
3M lists arc welding, MIG/MAG, TIG above 1 A and plasma. Sensitivity is set on 6 levels according to the process.
The curved filter window offers a 5.9 X 3 in / 150 X 76 mm viewing area according to 3M.
It opens up the view along the sides of the joint while allowing a slim shell. 3M links this geometry to reduced internal reflections and improved weight distribution. Clean protection plates and suitable process settings remain necessary to benefit from that visibility.
For a fleet welder repairing frames with this helmet, plan Solus glasses (YAS1101) with clear anti-fog lenses to wear underneath, along with Endura Pro gloves (G378GKGVBE) resistant to cuts and impacts for handling cut parts. An H6B neckband earmuff (OPH6B) can add hearing protection after checking its fit with the helmet, and the welding respirator (R8214) with valve completes the station when the assessment allows it. Finally, mark off the work area with black and yellow striped adhesive tape (ECT750).
Protection plates and spare parts specific to the G5-02 are selected by their exact 3M model, since they are not interchangeable with those of other Speedglas series. Keep the supplied bag and cloth to protect the curved 08-0000-50iC filter between shifts. To compare model 08-0100-50iC with distinct configurations, also review variant (R04-0112-00NC), solution (RG5-01), model (R06-0300-52SW), helmet (RG5-03-E09-0100), assembly (RG5-03E). Compare their contents with model 08-0100-50iC; the parts are not presumed interchangeable.
